Congratulations Seniors

We give thanks to God for the wonderful achievements of our Seniors in the 2023 Higher School Certificate (HSC). Congratulations to all our Year 11 and Year 12 students on completing your HSC or at least half of it. We are proud to celebrate your hard work and the amazing results you have achieved!

Congratulations in particular to Micah Edwards, on achieving DUX of the school wtih an amazing ATAR of 94.15 and to Evelyn Anyon on achieving an ATAR of 91.1.

Also a big congratulations to the following Distinguished Achievers who achieved a Band 6 (a mark greater than 90) in one of their subjects:

Isabella Cimador - Visual Arts
Darcy Thomas - Mathematics Standard

Overall, as a school we are incredibly pleased with the results, many students achieving a Band 5 or 6 in at least one of their subjects. We also achieved above the state average in Ancient History, CAFS, Industrial Technology Timber and Music 2.

Christmas Hampers for SALT

Over the last two weeks of term the students and staff at NCS collected food for SALT Christmas hampers. Thanks to the generosity of the school community, over 550 food items were collected with Year 5 leading the school by collecting the most items. Thank you to everyone who donated, and a thank you from SALT Care as well for the contribution. Well done to our Year 12 student Courtney L, who led and coordinated the collection - her vision and drive made it happen!

Our last group of amazing students who were awarded student of the week in the final weeks of the term were Levi O, Isa C and Lachie B —well done to each of you for demonstrating a commitment to learning and achieving your best.

History Masterminds Competitions

In the spirit of intellectual curiosity and historical exploration, students from Stage 4 and Stage 5 recently embarked on exhilarating journeys to The History Masterminds competitions in Sydney over the past few weeks.

The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by our students were truly commendable. As they engaged in rigorous rounds of questions and critical thinking challenges, it was evident that our young historians were prepared and eager to showcase their historical prowess. The competition covered a diverse range of historical periods, from ancient civilizations to modern history, providing a comprehensive test of the students' historical acumen. Not only did our students embrace the academic challenges presented at The History Masterminds, but they also had the opportunity to interact with like-minded peers from different schools. The exchange of ideas and perspectives fostered an enriching environment, promoting a love for history beyond the confines of the classroom.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the participants for their hard work, dedication, and excellent representation of our school. Your commitment to intellectual growth and passion for history is truly inspiring. In stage 5 we had Maddie W, Hayley E, Sophie F, Tabi B, Chloe C, Evy M, Kent E and Harvey W.

In Stage 4 we had Layla M, Myles C, Alisha C, Bridget C, Grace P, Jude M, Koby H, Taj C, Will B and Laura B.

We would also like to express our gratitude to the teachers and mentors who guided and supported our students throughout their preparation and took us to Sydney for the competition. Mrs Rebel and Mr De Rooy your encouragement and commitment to nurturing the intellectual curiosity of our students have undoubtedly played a pivotal role in their success. Thank you also to Mrs Ellery for helping to organise and Mr Hefferan for driving stage 4 up.

Roxxem Franco-Manie Tournament

Over the past 2 weeks, year 8 French has competed in a French music competition called “Roxxem Franco-Manie Tournament”. We learnt a series of songs in French by clicking the missing lyrics and joining lyrics together and placing them in the correct order. As the competition grew more and more heated Madame made a deal that whichever class gained the highest average won hot chips and drink. This made the competition even more stressful for some and others just cruised right through it. In the end, 8R got the highest average but because we all worked so hard Madame decided to buy us all hot chips and drinks. A few days later we got the call that 8G had gotten the high score out of the competition for the song called “Le Cri”, the call came with a prize that others would benefit from next year, a year's subscription to “Roxxem Teacher Pro”. Year 8 had great fun during this competition and we are all glad that learning was once again made fun.

Ed Note: Over 7,000 students internationally in 338 classes competed so our two classes were amazing. Ten of our students joined the 'millionaire club' getting over 1,000,000 points and three more achieved over 2 million points. This was an outstanding effort!

La Bûche de Noël 2023

Once again year 8 enjoyed creating the traditional French Christmas dessert: La Bûche de Noël. Students researched the origins of this special dessert: 'The Bûche de Noël comes from an ancient Celtic tradition of finding a large tree log and burning it on the shortest day of the year, in celebration of the Winter Solstice.' 'The tradition dates back to mediaeval times. A log of wood, often from a fruit tree, was to ensure a successful harvest in the year to come. Depending on the region and its beliefs, salt, wine, or holy water and other other ingredients were sprinkled atop the log before lighting it on fire. Sprinkling wine, for example, was another way to guarantee the following year’s grape harvest would be bountiful.' (Millie & Eadee)
