CONFERENCE 3 PRE to POST & CSNSW SPORT AWARDS

On 6th  November Sydney Catholic Schools hosted the pre to post sport awards ceremony for Conference 3 at Bethany College in Hurstville. Parents of our elite athletes along with Mrs Burfield attended the event in support of our students. We are honoured to have Sophie A, Charli M and Audrey P all acknowledged for their achievements in the sporting pathways through Sydney Catholic Schools. All 3 girls were recognised for making MacKillop teams in 2023.

Sophie achieved this in Swimming, Cross Country and Football.

Audrey achieved this through Hockey.

Charli achieved this in Swimming and Touch Football.

Congratulations to Sophie A, Charli M and Audrey P!

On 13th November the same 3 elite athletes were further recognised at the Catholic Schools New South Wales Sport Awards. These prestigious awards, recognise the top % of students who have been outstanding in their sport across all Catholic Primary Schools in NSW. Audrey P and Sophie A received Maroon awards for showcasing exceptional skills at both MacKillop and NSWPSSA levels. To receive such an award requires reaching the highest level in a sport plus nominated by their NSW Coach. Audrey achieved this for Hockey and Sophie for Football.

Audrey's Maroon Award was the highest award given to any female hockey player in the NSW Catholic system. The award recognised her achievements in Co-Captaining the MacKillop team & NSWPSSA Hockey Team while placing 2nd at School Sports Australia.

Sophie's Maroon Award mentions her crucial role at the NSWPSSA Championships contributing to her team finishing 3rd. Her natural ability to lead, unwavering dedication and outstanding football skills along with her work ethic deserves recognition and makes her a worthy recipient of this award.

Charli’s NSW Touch Football Team were awarded NSWCPS Team of the Year for 2023. This is a very tough award with so many talented teams exceling throughout Sydney Catholic Schools. What an honour for Charli to be part of such a remarkable team.

The future on the field is looking very bright for these superstars who continue to impress in the sporting arena. We know their journey is coming to end with Sydney Catholic Primary Schools but we all look forward to seeing these girls flourish in their chosen sports in the years to come. Well earned and deserved girls.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL/ TRIAL YEARS 2-6

The Annual School Swimming Carnival for Years 2-6 will be held on Thursday, 23rd November 2023 at Engadine Swimming Pool. Students will be required at school by 8:15am. At the end of the carnival, students are allowed to leave with a parent or carer however, please tell your child’s classroom teacher before leaving. All other students will return to school by bus in time for normal dismissal.

Please provide consent for your child via COMPASS this week if you haven’t done so already. Nominations have now closed for all timed events.

Sport Captains have been asked to arrive at the pool earlier to assist our teachers with setting up. Any student who is doing the 200m Individual Medley has also been asked to arrive directly to the pool. If this is the case for your child, the school will contact you with a pool arrival time.

Only the Olympic pool will be used and we have altered the program to cater for all swimming abilities. Remember that all students can only enter one distance per stroke.

Timed events are for swimmers with a high level of skill who want to be considered to represent the school at the Conference 3 Trial. Students may not choose to enter these events on the day as the paperwork has been completed for these events. Just a reminder that all timed events are run as finals.

Grade events are for students who do not wish to be considered for selection but would like to compete against swimmers in their own grade of similar ability.  Grade events will NOT be timed. Grade events will be offered in 50m, 25m and a short distance kickboard race. The kick board race is for beginner swimmers and will start from the shallow end. We will have year 6 students to assist any students not confident.

Year 6 students will ONLY compete in the grade 50m freestyle and subsequent Year 6 fun novelty pool float. Year 6 students may bring a floating, inflatable pool toy for this novelty event but it is the students responsibility to inflate it at the carnival. Unfortunately there will be no room on the bus for multiple inflated toys. Alternatively parents can bring the inflatable float and hand it over to students at the carnival.

Students cannot use the canteen as the canteen is cashless.

Requirements for all swimmers-

  • wear swimming costume and rash shirt if desired
  • coloured clothes to represent house colour
  • bring recess, lunch and plenty of water
  • wear school hat or hat in your team colour
  • wear and bring lots of sunscreen
  • bring towel and goggles, cap if needed
  • no coloured zinc or streamers allowed (pool rule)

GALA DAYS

YEAR 6 SYDNEY EAST OZ-TAG GALA DAY

A selection of our year 6 students had a great day at the Sydney East Oz-Tag Gala Day. Mrs Pieratos was very impressed with how students played and behaved both on and off the field. I have provided feedback to Sydney East Oz-Tag to allow more teams for the coming years. I hope they adopt the change so we can involve more students in the future.

NRL SHARKS LEAGUE TAG GALA DAY

Nominations have closed for the year 3-5 Sharks League Tag Gala Day. Families who expressed interest in this event would have received permission via COMPASS. Please ensure you have provided consent for this day at your earliest convenience. If your situation has changed please email amanda.col@syd.catholic.edu.au as teams will be formed the week before the event. Any parent who has volunteered their time to act as a team manager will be emailed shortly. We are very grateful to the many parent helpers who always take their time to assist our staff in ensuring days like this can proceed successfully.

Remember that parents are required to organise transport for their child to and from the ground. The draw will be shared to participating families via COMPASS once it has been released.

NRL SHARKS STAGE 1 (YEAR 1 and 2) GALA DAY

Our school has been invited to participate in an infants NRL hosted League Tag Gala Day at Gwawley Park North, Taren Point on Thursday, 30th November. This is a unique opportunity as gala days aren’t usually offered at an infant level.

This gala day is a combined schools gala day and we will be entering as a representation of Sydney Catholic Schools. This is a non-competitive and fun gala day which is an optional event and students who are not attending will continue on with regular lessons at school. We highly recommend only those students who show interest in this sport or a similar sport to get involved in the day.

Parents are required to organise transport for their child to and from the ground. The gala day format and structure has not been released and because we have never been involved in an infants gala day before, it is hard to predict the drop off and pick up time. As soon as NRL share these details, parents will be notified via COMPASS. Parents are not required to stay for the duration of the event as St Patricks supervising teachers are attending. Of course we value parents to stay and assist if possible. We would require many parent helpers at such an event. We will treat this gala day no different to any other excursion that this age group would attend. Remember by filling out the registration form, this is an expression of interest. Once finer details are released, you can opt out of this event if you believe your child will not benefit from this experience.

Expressions of interest strictly closes on 16th November. Express your interest via this Online Registration Form. Permission will be sent via Compass after your child has been registered.

SCS UNIFIED ALL ABILITIES DAY

Sydney Catholic Schools is continuing to provide new and exciting opportunities in sport for Students with Disability through the Unified All Abilities Multi Sport Days. The success of this day which was held in Term 2 has seen another day organised on 1st December 2023 with new sport experiences on offer. This time around Tennis and Badminton are involved.

The Unified All Abilities Multi Sport Days give students the opportunity to try a range of sports. During this day, individuals with and without a disability share the empowerment that comes with engaging in sport. Aimed at primary students aged 8-13 years with intellectual, social-emotional, sensory and physical disabilities, the days are an opportunity to have a go in a fun and inclusive environment. The unified program allows students to bring a buddy from their school to help them learn new skills and give them the confidence to participate and compete against other students.

These days are designed to:

  • promote social inclusion
  • provide students with a sense of connectedness
  • build a sense of self
  • encourage ‘giving it a go’
  • foster a love of the game.

The day involves:

  • learning more about Tennis and Badminton
  • access to specialised coaching and adaptive equipment
  • opportunities to network with students and teachers from other schools
  • competing in games against other students.

Benefits of attending the day include:

  • building social wellbeing and friendships
  • strengthening balance, coordination and mobility skills
  • working as part of a team, collaborating and planning
  • increased self-esteem through a sense of achievement.

This day will be held on 1st December at Sydney Olympic Park. If you are interested in your child attending this event, please email amanda.col@syd.catholic.edu.au and a paper registration form will be sent home with your child. Please fill this out and return it to school at your earliest convenience.

SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVE JERSEYS

Thank you for the influx of returned representative jerseys. If you haven’t done so already, this is just a friendly reminder to have a look for any more representative jerseys that may still be hiding in the wardrobes at home. If they could be returned to the school office, it is much appreciated. Thank you.

Community Sport

Lana B from year 4 competed in 2 teams at the Little Athletics State Relay Championships. Lana’s 4x100m girls relay team got Gold and also broke the NSW STATE RECORD not once but twice in the day (the heat then final). Lana also competed in the mixed 4x400m relay team (2 boys 2 girls) and came home with a bronze medal. Superb effort Lana! To top it off she recently found out she made the 2024 SSFA SAP girls football (soccer) team while her brother Mateo also made the 2024 SAP boys football team for Sydney United.

If you have any sporting news you would like to share with our school community please email me - amanda.col@syd.catholic.edu.au

Thank you,
