Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

It is hard to believe we are so close to the end of the year! Teachers are amazed at the growth we are seeing in students, both academically and personally. In Stage 1 we see lots of 'lightbulb' moments, where students make sense of new learning and put their new skills into practice. Students should feel very proud of their achievements this year!

English

We are learning to:

  • use the prefix 'un' at the beginning of words to change the meaning (tidy - untidy)
  • read and spell words with three and four syllables
  • plan a narrative using brainstorming techniques and scaffolds
  • write a narrative using new vocabulary to enhance our sentences
  • use 'show, don't tell' by using actions and our five senses to engage the reader.

Maths

We are learning to:

  • communicate mathematically
  • draw a picture, write a number sentence and use mathematical language to explain how we reached our answer
  • use our background knowledge to connect related ideas
  • represent concepts in different ways
  • choose and use efficient strategies to solve problems.

Visual Arts

We have begun our end of year arts and crafts rotations. Over the next 2 weeks, students will rotate around all the Stage 1 classrooms where the teachers have prepared fun, creative and (sometimes) glittery art and craft activities. These activities are Christmas themed for those who wish to get festive, with other options available. Lots of painting, gluing, folding, cutting and drawing to keep little fingers busy.

The wet weather we have been having has meant bringing out the toys, blocks and board games and having fun indoors! Lots of make-believe and imaginative play - so lovely to see!
