Debating Grand Final

Last Wednesday, Chilwell A and Chilwell B competed against one another in the Barwon Junior Debating Competition Grand Final. Having both teams make it into the GF was a great honour, one that has never been achieved before, and testament to the hard work, dedication and team spirit that our nine debaters have shown throughout the year.

Like the semi-finals, the grand final was an impromptu debate, meaning that teams were only given half an hour to prepare. The topic was That Australia Should Be a Cashless Society. Team A won the coin toss and selected the affirmative side, meaning Team B debated for the negative. It was a challenging topic, but both teams did an exceptional job, delivering a high-quality debate with plenty of robust arguments and rebuttals. In the end, Team B came away with the win by one point. Congratulations to James Ilievski, Team B’s third speaker, who was awarded Best Speaker.

This brings our very successful 2023 debating season to a close. Many thanks to our debaters – Minnie, Asher, Sayuni and Eli (Chilwell A) and James, April, Jayden, Alice and Niki (Chilwell B) - who we hope will continue to hone their debating skills at high school. Thanks also to their teachers and parents for their support and encouragement at every stage of the competition. We are looking forward to doing it all again with a new cohort in 2024!

Cultural Day...

On Friday the 24th of November, we had some food trucks from around the world come to visit Chilwell. Students were able to purchase Dumplings, Nachos, Pizza, and Thai noodles or rice to celebrate Cultural Day. Students were also encouraged to dress in their own cultures clothing, or as the colours from another countries flag.

In the classrooms, our budding artists worked diligently to create artwork that celebrated various cultural festivals. Inspired by the spirit of inclusivity and diversity, our students created posters reflecting the colours, traditions, and customs of festivals from around the globe.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to embrace and appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our school community. We would like to say a big thank you to the junior school council for organising this day, and for our food truck vendors for their delicious food!

Daniel Lim In Elvis!

Chilwell is very excited to announce one of our students will be playing the role of young Elvis in the upcoming theatre performance 'Elvis - A Musical Revolution'

Daniel Lim from 6MG has spent nearly 2 weeks rehearsing in Sydney at end of Term 3 and another week in Melbourne before shows started.

He was lucky to be selected to perform on opening night. (He shares the role of Young Elvis with 3 other children, so they do 2 shows each a week).

Daniel has had to learn to speak in a southern American accent. He was even trained by the same dialect coach that trained Austin Butler, who plays Elvis in the recent movie!

By the time this newsletter is published he will have already done 6 shows. Daniels performance dates for November have been released, (Please see image below for Daniels specific performance night) if you are interesting in supporting him, tickets are available via the link below.
