Snapshots from the week

Year 12 Biology

Our Year 12 Biology students are currently applying their knowledge from Unit 4 Senior Biology to learn more about genetics and biotechnology.  Working with Dr Gurion Ang (UQ) and his team of undergraduate students, the Year 12 students have been able to have the opportunity to work in a University Lab whilst learning about evolutionary biology and genetics.

Debating Wrap Up

We are very proud of our brilliant Year 8 Debating team who made it through to the first round of the QDU finals for 2025.

Unfortunately, they lost to Brisbane State High in a well fought debate last night, but we are excited to see what this talented team will achieve in the future!

Can you build Balmoral?

That was the challenge set by Ms Swindley, who asked her class to recreate our school using only the materials available in the classroom!

First Nations Skateboard Donation

We’re so excited to once again have a stunning hand-painted skateboard donated by the incredibly talented Kylie — a proud Aboriginal artist and mother of two Balmoral students, Oliver and Xavier.

Kylie, Oliver and Xavier are descendants of the Coastal Plains Nation in North East Tasmania, connected to the Melythina Tiakana Warrana (Heart of Country) Aboriginal Corporation, with ancestral ties to the remarkable Dolly Dalrymple, a prominent figure in Australian history.

Each year, Kylie generously donates one of her custom-painted skateboards to Balmoral for NAIDOC Week, spreading joy and cultural pride through her art.

This year’s board will be awarded to a student or staff member who gets involved in NAIDOC celebrations throughout the week — think boomerang hunts, activities and more!

Big thanks to Kylie and her family for helping make our celebrations even more special.

Deadly Choices Visit Balmoral during NAIDOC Celebrations

As part of our ongoing NAIDOC Celebrations, Deadly Choices joined us at lunchtime today to run games on the oval.

A big thank you to their team for bringing students together in a fun and active way while celebrating culture and community.

Guest Speakers and NAIDOC activities

A huge thanks to our guest speakers who joined us yesterday for our NAIDOC Week assembly and Q&A. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your stories and experiences with our students and staff.

It was great to see so many students getting involved in activities across the school – from cookie painting to cultural conversations and more.

Thanks to everyone who helped make today a meaningful part of our NAIDOC celebrations!

Athletics Carnival Day Two

Students take to the track during day 2 of the Athletics Carnival!

Year 8 Music Academy Workshop

This week our year 8 Music Academy class welcomed Fletcher Babb from the Griffith University Conservatorium of Music.

Fletcher ran a song writing workshop with our young musicians that focused on protest music, which is the basis of their current unit. Beginning with naming current political, social and cultural issues, students were guided with strategies, suggestions and constructive feedback on their composition and song writing processes.

Our year 8 Music Academy students were thoroughly engrossed in the workshop and are now looking forward to putting their knowledge and skills into creating the best protest songs that they can.
