Grade 5/6 News

Hi Grade 5/6 Families,
The students have settled back into the Wimba Way and have been reconnecting with their friends and teachers.
Literacy:
In Literacy, students have continued exploring how suffixes are used to build words. We have focused on the suffixes -ure and -ar, and learnt the meaning of a range of related words including 'feature' and 'perpendicular'.
In Talk for Writing, students have been learning how to create an explanation text, using Why the Western Swamp Dragons Are Extinct as their modelled text. Students have planned and begun composing their paragraphs, using the following tools to write in a cohesive and engaging manner:
- Show cause and effect using causal conjunctions
- Explain sequence using time adverbials
- Engage the reader by asking leading questions
- Explain the impact on different groups, varying the reasons accordingly
Literature:
As part of our Literature unit, we are delving into the book Us Mob Walawurru, which tells the story of Ruby, a young Luritja girl growing up in Central Australia in the 1960s. Ruby navigates the cultural differences between her Aboriginal community and the "whitefella" world. The book explores themes of identity, family, connection to land, and the impact of colonialism on Aboriginal people. Students are building on their prior knowledge of First Nations peoples and engaging in rich discussions to extend and challenge their thinking.
Mathematics:
In Maths, the Grade 5 students have been learning about perimeter and area. They have developed strategies to measure and compare perimeter and area, and have practised finding the perimeter and area of rectangles and squares.
The Grade 6 students have been focusing on subtracting and adding decimals up to 3 decimal places.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
In SEL, the students have been learning about identifying stressors and recognising when to use self-calming strategies to reduce their stress and lift their mood.
