Grade 1 News

Hello Grade One families, Welcome back to Term 3
We have had an excellent start to the term! It has been jam packed so far!
We have had Pyjama Day, a NAIDOC incursion and a trip to the Royal Botanical Gardens!
English
We have begun the term by revising our digraphs //ay/ /ee/ /igh/ /oa/ /oo/ /or/ /oy/ /ar/ /oo/ /er/ /ou/ /are/ /ow/ /oi/ /ir/
Students have been practicing writing the sounds, learning words that include the sound and practicing writing sentences.
Talk For Writing
This term we have begun learning the story ‘Kevin’s Kangaroo Picnic’ students have been following along and retelling the story with actions.
In this unit, students will be learning about setting (where a story takes place). They will be learning to give their settings a name and using interesting words to describe it.
Core Knowledge
This term so far, we have been focusing on learning about First Nations Peoples and their culture. Students have been listening to Dreaming stories and learning about the beliefs of the First Nations Peoples.
This last week we have been learning about fables and the lessons that they teach us.
Maths
So far this term, we have been learning about collecting data, putting that data into different data displays for example picture graphs and bar graphs. Students have then been analysing what the data is telling them.
We have started learning about numbers to 40. We have been learning to break up the number into 10s and 1s. For example, the number 35 is made up of 3 tens and 5 ones.
Things to work on at home:
English:
- Reading every night and writing it in your child’s diary
- Practising the sounds: listed above
- Writing words with these sounds
Maths:
- Practising number formation
- Counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s
- Understanding numbers up to 40 into tens and ones for example” 35 is 3 tens (30) and 5 ones
Reminders:
- Breakfast Club: Open to all students on Tuesday and Friday from 8:30am – 8:45am
- Book Week Dress up day Monday 18th August
