CLASS OF 2025!
Grade 6 Newsletter – Term 3, Weeks 1–2
Dear families,
Welcome back to Term 3! We've had a fantastic and busy start to the term, with students settling in quickly and engaging deeply with their learning.
Mathematics
Our focus in Maths has been on fractions—specifically, adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and working with mixed number fractions. Students have been learning how to simplify answers and build fluency with these skills. Next week, we’ll be moving into a two-week unit on angles, where students will explore types of angles, measuring angles, and calculating unknown angles.
Integrated Studies – Civics and Citizenship
We’ve launched our new inquiry into how democratic nations run, beginning with an exploration of Australia’s three levels of government. Over the coming weeks, students will take part in mock campaigns, elections, and voting experiences to better understand the role of citizenship, representation, and democracy in our country.
Reading We’ve started a new class novel, Can You See Me? by Libby Scott. This powerful and thought-provoking book has sparked curiosity, deep reflection, and meaningful connections among students. The themes in the novel have provided excellent discussion starters and are helping build empathy and understanding.
Writing
Our writing this term is focusing on persuasive texts. Inspired by the novel, students are planning and drafting persuasive letters to the principal to argue for the introduction of a school therapy dog. Alongside this, we’re continuing to refine our sentence-level writing, including the use of conjunctions, appositives, and a range of persuasive language features to strengthen their arguments.
Sport
Our 5/6 sport program has kicked off with students beginning training in their selected sports for upcoming inter-school competitions later in the term. It’s been great to see the enthusiasm and team spirit on display already! Earlier this week, a number of students proudly represented our school in the divisional play-offs, showing determination and great sportsmanship. Congratulations to all those who participated—we are very proud of you!
Thank you for your continued support. We’re looking forward to a rich and exciting term ahead!
Warm regards,
The Grade 6 Team
