Grade 5

Literacy
We are excited to begin our novel study of The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor! This engaging story is set in the magical Cole’s Book Arcade in Melbourne during the 1890s and follows two brave siblings as they face riddles, challenges, and a mysterious villain to save their family. As well as exploring themes of courage, family, and imagination, students will also be learning about a fascinating piece of Melbourne’s history through the real-life arcade represented in the book. Throughout the term, students will develop their comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills through lively discussions and creative responses. It’s the perfect adventure to inspire a love of reading and bring history to life!
Also as a part of this novel study, students will have the opportunity to create their own narrative writing piece. Inspired by The Grandest Bookshop in the World, they will learn how to blend historical settings with imaginative elements such as fantasy, magic or mystery. Using what they’ve learned about Melbourne’s past and the storytelling techniques found in the novel, students have begun planning and crafting original stories that include rich descriptions, engaging characters, a chosen aspect of world history and a touch of magic or suspense. This creative writing task will allow them to apply their understanding of narrative structure while exploring their own ideas and imagination.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students have recently completed a maths unit focused on angles, and they should be proud of the excellent effort they put into their learning. Throughout the unit, students developed their understanding of different types of angles, including acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex angles, as well as full revolutions. They learned how to use a protractor accurately to measure and draw angles and how to identify angles in various shapes and everyday contexts. Students also explored how angles are used in problem-solving. Their ability to apply these skills confidently in a range of tasks has demonstrated just how much their learning and thinking has grown.
Students will next begin another Fractions unit that will link from the learnings from Term 2.
