Grade 2

Welcome to Term 3!
The Grade 2 teachers were very impressed to watch students return from the school break and slide straight back into demonstrating our school values and following routines and expectations with ease.
In Literacy we have focused on the following:
Spelling - Students have consolidated their learning on identifying compound words, explored using the prefix ‘re’, revised other prefixes such as ‘ful’ and ‘un’and practiced spelling the tricky words: minutes, great and these.
Comprehension - Students are studying the next comprehension strategy ‘Inferring’. Students have had a go at being detectives, looking for clues and using their prior knowledge to make inferences from pictures and texts to further understand what they are reading.
Grammar - Students explored their ability to expand on describing a verb using adverbs. They practiced identifying adverbs and using them in sentences.
Storybook - Lastly, this fortnight students read “The Story of Rosy Dock”. We discussed the meaning of the vocabulary words; pounds, shatter and feast. Students also got to participate in a craft activity, creating their own collage of the setting of the story.
In Writing, Students have begun our Narrative adaptations unit this term. This is where students take a story that has been read to them and adapt it by altering one or more of; characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.
For the first week, we explored students' abilities to identify the elements of a narrative, for example the beginning, middle and end of different texts. Students also practiced listening to and reading a story and then sequencing and retelling the main events. During the second week, students read “The Very Cranky Bear” and were asked to keep the same beginning element but adapt it by changing the problem and solution. Next week we will be adapting “The true story of the three little pigs”.
This fortnight in Numeracy, we have explored strategies to solve multiplication problems. We began by using the term ‘groups of’ and learning how to ensure the groups are equal. Students then moved to representing multiplication through repeated addition. The grade 2’s finished the topic by exploring how to read and make arrays. They then used all strategies learnt to practice solving different multiplication problems through some games. We are very proud of how our grade 2 cohort understood the concept of multiplication and demonstrated the strategies!
This term for Integrated, we begin our Geography unit. We have started looking at who we are in terms of identifying personal details about ourselves in relation to location. looking at where we live beginning with our Country and moving to, state, city, suburb, street name and house number. Students got to create a little passport and luggage tag. This past week, we delved deeper into identifying the different states and territories in Australia and identifying which one we live in. We also had a go at using Google Maps and Google Earth to locate where our school is. Students completed a jigsaw puzzle piecing together the states and territories on a blank map of Australia and a luggage suitcase.
For our Social and Emotional Learning, we played ‘The Life Raft Game’. When the music stopped, students had to locate a hula hoop which represented a little island in order for them to stay safe from the roaming shark. Students had to practice using both verbal and non-verbal communication skills to ensure their friends were all helped to safety. This activity, focused on using appropriate communication skills and showing friendship by helping others. This term as a whole school, we are focusing on our entering the classroom, exiting the classroom and transitioning around the school expectations. Don’t forget to check out the new posters on our windows demonstrating the expectations!
Thanks for your continued support at home.
Warm regards
The Year 2 Team.
