Little LEAPers Program

This week our six Little LEAPers had their first lessons. These Year 1 and 2 students have been selected to participate in a version of our LEAP (for Years 3 - 6 students) that will challenge them to extend their mathematical thinking.

In their first session they created a group work chart as well as having their photos taken for The Learning Pit poster. Because they are going to be challenged and won't immediately know the answer, they needed to understand that being confused or not knowing the answer immediately is absolutely fine. It can be an uncomfortable feeling but necessary to develop a growth mindset.

We then started to look at the '=' sign and what it means. Equivalence is an important concept for budding mathematicians to understand. They worked in pairs to find the missing part that would produce equivalence. One of the dispositions that Little LEAPers will develop is being able to explain your thinking to someone else, something that even older students struggle with some times.

We are off to a great start!
