Year 5/6 Learning Reflection

Welcome to Term 3!!
The Grade 5/6 students began Term 3 with a new serial read as part of our Literacy Block.
The word, sentence and text level writing will all be based around these novels, which link beautifully with our latest Unit of Work entitled Perspectives on Colonisation.
The Grade 5 classes are reading the Black Cockatoo series by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler and the Grade 6 classes are reading Us Mob Walarurru by David Spillman and Lisa Wilyuka. Both texts tell the story of a young character and their connections to family, culture and Country.
During Maths lessons for the past two weeks, the Grade 5/6 students have been learning about fractions.
Comparing fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and solving word problems involving fractions. In most cases, we used the LCM, (lowest common multiple) or doubling and halving to help us find a common denominator to calculate.
As part of our SEL/Cyber Safety lessons, the Grade 5/6 students have been learning about keeping themselves safe online. We learnt about different electronic phishing scams, how to identify them and who to report to.
We then created acronyms, warning others about how to keep safe.
The Grade 5 students have also had the lovely Life Education Van teachers in class teaching us age appropriate lessons about Building and Sustaining Relationships and Puberty (for Grade 5).
The Grade 6 age appropriate units, Navigating Friendships and The Journey of Human Reproduction will be held next week.
*Just a reminder to parents, please remember to have your medical form returned back to your class teacher as soon as possible, if your child is attending camp this year.
