Helping Your Child at Home
I hope you have all had a wonderful Term 3! It’s the time of year when our cherry blossoms bloom and the Vitamin D-deficient among us spring back to life.
Please see below for some ways you can support your child with mathematics over the holiday break.
Counting Forwards: Count forwards from any given number. Children often get stuck transitioning past 100 (e.g., at 109). You could ask your child to start counting from 92 until you say stop—if they get stuck at 109, continue counting together chorally.
Counting Backwards: Teen numbers can be tricky. Count backwards from 25. Children frequently get stuck on numbers like 15 and 13. Practice counting backwards together!
Skip Counting: Skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Start first from 0, and then try starting from any given number (for example, skip counting by 5s starting from 23).
Multiplication Facts: Try this fun multiplication facts website: https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/math-trainer-multiply.html! Did you know there are also multiplication rules? See them pictured below.
Fractions: Play this fun fraction game at home: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/build-a-fraction/latest/build-a-fraction_en.html
Additional Games: LoveMaths: https://www.lovemaths.me/ has lots of fun, family-friendly games that encourage mathematical fluency and reasoning. Learn and play one of the games as a family!
