Matematica in 1/2

In 1/2, our mathematicians are exploring multiplication and division through hands-on problem solving. Students are learning to share objects into equal groups, skip count efficiently in 2s, 5s and 10s, and represent multiplication and division using different strategies, including equal groups, arrays, repeated subtraction and partitioning.

An important part of our learning is explaining how we know and discovering that the same problem can be solved in different ways. Students are using Thinkboards to represent their thinking in multiple ways and make connections between pictures, groups, arrays and number sentences.

How can you support your child at home?

Families can support at home by practising skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, making equal groups with everyday objects, and asking: “Can you make 4 equal groups?”, “How many are in each group?” or “How could you show this in another way?” Most importantly, ask your child to explain their thinking: “How did you work it out?” rather than focusing only on the correct answer. Practice using these strategies at home!

Unit of Work in 1/2

In our Celebrating Differences unit, students are exploring how people, families and communities can be both similar and different. In English, our recent visit to Melbourne Museum supported students to explore different cultures, traditions and ways of life, developing an understanding of the importance of respecting and celebrating differences.

In Italian, students are exploring generations and change over time. They have interviewed a special person from an older generation and are comparing their experiences of school, games, family life and everyday routines with life today. Through these conversations, students are discovering what has changed and what has stayed the same across generations.
