State Schools Spectacular: What’s Possible When We Creare Insieme

This year, Brunswick South Primary School had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular for the very first time, with 16 of our students joining the Mass Dance at John Cain Arena.

For 27 weeks, our students committed to rehearsals, learning choreography, building their confidence and working together as part of something much bigger than themselves. They joined forces with more than 2,500 students from around 200 Victorian government schools, culminating in an extraordinary performance on one of Melbourne’s biggest stages. 

It was a wonderful demonstration of two of our school values: Mutual Responsibility and Sense of Possibility. Our students showed commitment to one another, supported each other through the challenges of learning the routines and discovered what is possible when we creare insieme - create together.

Seeing our students on stage at John Cain Arena was a very special moment. I have to admit, when I spotted them during the performance, I became a little teary! I was incredibly proud of the way they represented our school and the enthusiasm, dedication and joy they brought to the experience.

A huge thank you to Faith, Brigitte and Kylie for their support, and an especially enormous thank you to Blake for his endless energy, dedication and commitment to making this incredible opportunity available to our students. Experiences like this don’t happen without people who are willing to go above and beyond.

We hope this will become an annual opportunity for our students, and we will be submitting an application to participate again next year.

And if you missed the live performance, you’ll have another chance to see our students shine! The 2026 Victorian State Schools Spectacular will be broadcast on Channel 7 on Friday 18 December, with the program also available on 7plus.

Trivia Night

Friday night’s Trivia Night was a sell-out, with our community proving once again that they know how to have fun; and, judging by the costumes, how to commit to a theme! 

The hall was packed with fierce competition, questionable general knowledge and some truly spectacular costumes. We had the Nitwits, complete with an actual human-sized nitw; a dozen Dolly Partons rocking blonde wigs, cowboy boots, fabulous fringes and enough sequins to sink a ship; our staff table of Mr Men and Little Miss characters; and the Hard Rubbish crew, resplendent in their high-vis. Our Masters of Ceremonies, parents Dan Ziffer and Pete Mattessi, kept things classy in their dapper black-tie attire.

The night raised more than $8300 which will go towards paying off our new nature play space and turf.

A huge thank you to our Community and Fundraising Subcommittee and our wonderful volunteers who made the evening possible; especially Pete, Dan, Thea, Karen, Sam, Sophie and Marie. Shout-out to team Ciao Down Under, who helped to staff the bar all night. There was a huge amount of work behind the scenes to make the event possible, and we’re very grateful to you all.

We’re already wondering what costumes could possibly top this year’s effort…

Following the official DET survey, we will also send a short supplementary survey to gather more specific feedback about your experiences of our school. This was particularly valuable last year, providing insights that helped shape a number of actions, including the introduction of our Come Va? snapshots and more regular “How can I help at home?” information in the newsletter.

Working Bee this Saturday 🌿

Our next Working Bee is this Saturday, and we’re hoping for another big turnout after the success of our last one! With a beautiful sunny spring day forecast, it’s a great chance to get outdoors and lend a hand.

A huge thank you to Kelley and our Environment Subcommittee for organising these working bees. The school is looking fantastic thanks to their efforts and the combined energy of many hands.

The ropes course will be installed in the Log Forest next week, and the kids are loving the Nature Play area. 

If you can spare an hour or two, please come on down between 11am-2pm.

Next week is our final week of Term 3! It’s hard to believe how quickly the term has flown by, with so many exciting events, learning opportunities, extra-curricular activities and improvements around our school.

There’s still plenty happening next week, but then it’s time for a well-earned break!
