It has been a busy term so far, with us just having celebrated Book Week 2023 in Week five, with our infant and primary parades in the Auditorium. It was encouraging to see all the wonderful costumes and hear students talking about their favourite books in the classroom.

Following the school values, we have been able to reflect upon what compassion means and how we put it into action.  With the older students, we focussed on the Good Samaritan.

In our library lessons we have also looked at Australian Literature, which has included ballads by A.B. Patterson and other poetry.  We have discussed Aussie Slang and how challenging it is for our EAL (English as an Additional Language) students to understand what we are saying.  Many students were not aware of the meaning of slang terms such as hard yakka, fair dinkum or barbie.  Older students enjoyed learning about Ned Kelly and deciding if he was a hero or a villain, or both of these.  Students needed to be able to give reasons for their opinions.

This week we have begun looking at the genre of mysteries and reading short stories that involve solving a crime.  This has motivated some students to try looking at this as a genre instead of what they might usually read.
