Lab Report

Jessica Deans

Welcome back to The Lab Report, hopefully everyone has had a lovely start to the year.

Our first newsletter entry this year is about our Year 4’s Portfolio task. They are working through a unit called A Life On Our Planet, based on the documentary of the same name created by Sir David Attenborough. Each week the students learn and explore a different imperative that has been put forward as needed for helping our planet recover.

So far we have covered Eliminate Waste which talked about Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Students used the Knox council guidelines for bins, looked at why you should never throw batteries in the bin (they can cause fires), what to do with unwanted clothes and toys and why we should care for our belongings.

This week we explored Using Less Space. This focussed on biodiversity and how our choices have power. Choosing to buy products that are better for the environment, from our printer paper to avoiding unsustainable palm oil to not using chemicals in your garden and changing your toilet paper for sustainably sourced products all make a difference.

“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” - Anne-Marie Bonneau

I have encouraged students to ask their parents to sit down and watch A Life On Our Planet as it shows that it’s not all doom and gloom, there are practical solutions to the biodiversity crisis that we are currently facing, as well as climate change fixes. I pointed out to students, Sir David Attenborough is 98 this year. He does not need to be making documentaries and promoting positive change. He is doing it because his passion for life on this Earth makes him want to make a difference and make this world a better place for the kids growing up in it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and if anyone would like any more information please let me know.

For parents wanting more information about this documentary before viewing it with their children, I am also including a link to common sense media’s parental review.
