Year 9 News
Vermont Secondary College
As with all year levels, Year Nine’s have been busy completing their Learning Assessment Tasks across their subjects as we approach the end of Term three. We trust students are up to date with these tasks and continue to remain so across all subjects.
On Thursday, 4th September, 18 Year 9 students and 3 staff took a coach to Holmesglen Chadstone and were involved in a program called the 'Vocational Taster Experience'. This is specifically designed for Year 9 students and the one-day experience saw students immersed into the world of work in one or more industries to support their understanding and exploration of career pathways.
On arrival our students were greeted by Oliva, the project manager. They watched a short Holmesglen video and undertook a brief induction. They then moved into the trade barn to learn about sanding and painting timber. Each student was given PPE, sandpaper, paint brush, cloth and a timber phone/ipad docking station template to prepare, sand and stain.
The second task was tiling two coasters using small cement sheet squares. Students learnt the art of applying the adhesive to the tile and grouting once dry. Whilst the glue was drying, students had a tour of the campus. They were able to view other large trade barns, walked through a large pre-apprentice group constructing roof trusses and returned for their lunch break. After lunch, the group grouted the tiled coasters before moving onto the final task of the day: a group paving challenge. The students were split into 4 groups and were in a race to lay tiles on the barn floor using the patterned plan provided.
We received some positive feedback from staff and students on their return to school and we hope this experience has provided some ‘food for thought’ in regard to potential future pathways.
Back at school, we would like to highlight that all Year 9 students will be undertaking the Morrisby career counselling program (which runs in all Victorian Government Schools), on Wednesday, 17th September, during Periods 2 and 3.
The program looks to identify students' strengths and potential in given areas to help them make informed choices about subject selections, vocational education and training, senior secondary school certificates and further studies.
Personalised career and subject recommendations will be generated which students can then investigate.
If you know your child will be absent during these sessions, please contact the Pathways office.
Further to this, on Wednesday 8th October in Term 4, Pathways will commence the Morrisby counselling sessions to unpack the students profiling for students whose parents completed the consent forms. Consent forms can be found on the relevant Compass post-dated 10/8/25.
We hope the Year Nine students and their families have a positive and productive end to the term, enjoy a restful and happy break and come back to school looking forward to completing their final term as Year Nine students.
