YEAR 2 | OUTDOOR ED DAY

This week, our Year 2 students enjoyed two adventurous days outdoors in the bushland of Warrandyte to learn about camping and survival skills. Students worked together to build shelters, made wattleseed damper over coals, and created artworks with natural pigments from wildflowers. To enjoy some marshmallows over a campfire, students also learned to forage for kindling and to create a spark to light the campfire. Not surprisingly, the damper and marshmallows were the kids’ favourites!

MATHEMATICS

Update regarding the new Mathematics Curriculum in 2025

The Victorian Mathematics Curriculum 2.0 introduces several key updates aimed at improving the teaching and learning of mathematics. The changes to the curriculum benefit us at Milgate Primary School as they align closely with our approach to teaching mathematics. With a stronger focus on problem-solving, reasoning, and clear learning progressions, the curriculum supports our commitment to fostering deep mathematical understanding. Additionally, the emphasis on differentiated instruction and a transdisciplinary approach to numeracy mirrors our goal of providing engaging, inclusive, and real-world learning experiences for all students. The main changes include:

  1. Enhanced Focus on Problem Solving and Reasoning: There is a stronger emphasis on mathematical thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning skills. Students are encouraged to apply these skills across various contexts.
  2. Clearer Learning Progressions: Learning progressions have been refined, providing more explicit guidance on how students develop mathematical understanding over time. This aligns more closely with developmental milestones.
  3. Introduction of New Content Strands: Some content areas have been expanded or reorganised, reflecting contemporary research and educational priorities. This includes a focus on new or emerging areas such as data representation, digital technology, and statistical literacy.
  4. Greater Integration of Numeracy across Curriculum Areas: There is more attention to embedding numeracy skills across other subject areas, reinforcing the importance of mathematics in real-world contexts.
  5. Support for Differentiated Instruction: The curriculum places an emphasis on catering to diverse learning needs, with suggestions for differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching practices to ensure all students can progress.
  6. Assessment and Reporting Updates: The guidelines for assessment have been refined, with a focus on formative assessment and continuous monitoring of student progress, aligning with contemporary approaches to student evaluation. The main implication for this is that, as of 2025, students will receive one progression point for Mathematics; progression points will no longer be separated into the strands Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry or Statistics & Probability.

These changes aim to ensure that mathematics education remains relevant, engaging, and supportive of all students' learning journeys.

2024 ART EXHIBITION

OPEN PARACHUTE SEMINAR

Managing your child’s screen time

Join Dr. Nicole Sokol from Head into Healing for an online event designed to boost parents’ confidence in managing screen time in their household.

Dr Sokol will provide valuable insights and practical tips to help guide families through the daunting, and often daily, challenge of managing screen time usage.

Parents will learn how to minimise the risks associated with screen time and the essential steps to help their family establish healthy digital habits.

This seminar will run from 7-8pm on Tuesday, September 17. If you would like to attend, please use the link on the attached flyer.

LOST PROPERTY

Please check lost property (outside the staffroom)before the end of term for any missing belongings.  Anything not collected at the end of term will be donated or disposed of.

We have a dedicated parent volunteer who returns any named items to the classroom teacher, so please ensure you clearly name everything your child brings to school including hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles, balls, purses and wallets.  If you can't fit your child's full name, first name and surname initial is easiest for us to search. Please also make sure if you purchase second hand items that you remove the previous owners name and add your child's name so we can return it to the correct student if lost.

THANK YOU

Our Performing Arts team would like to thank the Foster-Green family for donating some musical instruments for our Performing Arts program.
