SSO Week

School Support Officers (SSO's) are an invaluable resource for teachers and students at Magill School. Each year we celebrate the part they play in our wonderful school community during the statewide SSO Week celebrations. Magill School would certainly not be the wonderful hub of learning and fun that it is without our truly wonderful SSO team.

Below are some comments from students about what they value most.

What does working with an SSO help you to do? How does it make you feel?

My SSO helps me with spelling words, saying the sounds and lets me read the sounds. Working with my SSO makes me happy.-

My SSO helps me with writing, spelling and blending. It makes me feel good working with my SSO.

Year 1 - David N2

My SSO helps me with Maths. He gives me extension activities because I’m good at Maths. This week he gave me a fun game finding squares. I feel excited when I get to work with him. 

Year 2 - Freya N6

With my SSO I write words and I read words. This helps me to learn and get better at reading. Working with my SSO makes me feel happy.

Year 3 - George M4

My SSO helps me learn how to spell and read new words. It makes me feel happy because I get to learn new stuff.

Year 4 - Thomas F8

They help me to manage my diabetes for when I will not have their support in the future.

Year 5 - Ollie F15

My SSO’s give me good ideas on how to concentrate better. Working with SSO’s makes me feel good about how I manage my learning in the classroom.

They help me with EVERYTHING! Learning in general and also helps support my teacher. They make me feel better about my learning.

I fully appreciate the SSO's for the incredible work they do every day. They possess extensive knowledge about a diverse range of disabilities and support strategies. They often know students so much better than we do as they have worked with them for many years. Sometimes they have a lot more knowledge, skills, and abilities than the classroom teacher!

Our SSO's show us tireless flexibility, constantly able to change directions at the last minute. This is completely appreciated and makes such a meaningful difference in the lives of our students, teachers (the humour is really appreciated), and the entire school community.
