Prep Team News

with Caitlin, Hayley & Andrea

Hello Prep families,

We cannot believe it is the end of Term Three! What a busy and fun-filled term we have had. It has been another great fortnight with our Prep breakfast, football clinic and school disco. Thank you for all your support this term with our learning program and special days. The Preps have come so far with their learning this year already. Please keep up all the great reading over the holidays, both with our provided readers and books from the library.

Our Willy Kid theme this fortnight is ‘Willy Kids are Positive’. We read ‘All You Can Be’ by Angela Casabene. We discussed how being positive and trying new things allows us to grow. We shared examples of when we have used a positive mindset to achieve a new goal.

Prep Breakfast

On Wednesday the Prep students arrived at school in their pyjamas and enjoyed a breakfast of cereal, toast and juice. We had been busy throughout the week making placemats and choosing the foods we would eat on the day. The Preps demonstrated their independence by helping to prepare their breakfast, along with washing their dishes at the end of the meal and changing into their school clothes. What a great way to end the term!

Western Bulldogs Football Clinic

The Preps were lucky enough to take part in a Western Bulldogs Football clinic this week. The students took part in lots of different drills and had the opportunity to practise their handball and kicking skills.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 9 - 10

Reading - Students will continue learning about appropriate reading behaviours, including pointing to the words as we read and taking a breath at full stops. They will also discuss text features such as full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks and question marks. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students are now beginning to explore digraphs. Our current focus is on the /th/ and /ng/ sounds.

Writing - Students are continuing to develop their letter formation and sound knowledge to write sentences. In particular this term, students will be reading narrative texts as a class. Students will then summarise these stories by writing a few sentences about the characters, setting, problem and solution from each text.

Numeracy - Students are exploring the concepts of measurement including mass, length and capacity. Students are ordering items based on their mass, length and capacity. We are also applying our knowledge and skills to problem solving activities.

Inquiry - This term, our inquiry topic is What's My Story? What's Your Story'. The Prep students are learning about the different ways stories can be told.

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound or maths focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.

Respectful Relationships - This term, our Respectful Relationships topic is gender and identity. Activities will assist students to reflect on their gendered identity, develop an awareness of positive and negative gender norms, challenge negative gender norms and develop an appreciation of difference.

Wishing you all a safe and restful holiday.

Warm regards,

The Prep Team–Caitlin Sullivan (Prep S), Hayley Thibou (Prep T) & Andrea Duxson (Prep D)
