Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Brittlee, Toni & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: In Writing, Year 4 students have continued with their Poetry unit, drafting and publishing a variety of poems including Cinquin, Quatrain, Couplets, Limericks, Haiku etc. In Reading, Year 4 students are continuing to explore  our class novel called The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf. In classes, students are discussing the themes of this text and the related political issues.

Numeracy: In Numeracy, Year 4 students had worked through our Chance and Probability unit. Students have discussed the terms ‘impossible, unlikely, likely and certain’ and what these terms mean. Students have been given different situations to identify how probable they are. Students have also worked with a probability line, linking this concept to our previous Decimal and Fractions unit. Our students have also continued to play games with a Number Sense focus and complete an activity that requires students to create their Dream Holiday. They are also using online programs such as Essential Assessment to reinforce skills and target specific individual goals.

Inquiry: Students have finished and presented their comparative analysis of an African or South American country for our unit of Inquiry. Students researched the capital city, population, fauna and flora and differing landmarks and climates about these cities. Students have finalised the unit by looking at different Australian landmarks, discussing the cultural significance, and why these important landmarks should be preserved.

E Safety: During Week 9, students had a lesson with Steven Puhar our Digital learning coordinator about e-safety. During this lesson students watched a video and discussed different challenges students may face online. Students were taught different strategies and ways to handle different situations with adult support. Your child may come home with questions regarding this content.

Willy Kids: Our fortnightly focus has been: "Willy Kids are Positive." Students this fortnight have created a page for them to refer back to discussing what positivity means, why having a positive outlook is important with phrases to reflect on when they’re not in a positive mindset.

Respectful Relationships: This term we are learning about gender and identity. We have focused on the following subtopics

  • Individual strengths
  • Gender norms
  • Male and Female roles in our evolving world
  • Feeling confident to say “no”

Your child may come home with questions regarding this content.

Kitchen Garden Program: Finishing the term, students have had the opportunity to participate in Kitchen Garden. Students have made bread, veggie fritters and blueberry pancakes. Students have also looked at how to grow Snow Peas and completed an experiment with celery. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered throughout the term, it has been greatly appreciated.

Open Afternoon: A big thank you  to everyone who was able to attend the Open Afternoon in Week 9. We had such a great turn out. Students were proud to showcase their many achievements during the term.
