During writing and Inquiry we have been creating dioramas to match a narrative story we will be writing over the term. Some of the setting ideas we have come up with are: outer space, underwater, a prehistoric jungle with roaming dinosaurs, fairy gardens, Antarctica and an African savanna. On Thursday and Friday this week, we have painted and decorated the backround of our boxes. We have also written the first 2 sentences of our story bringing the background to life. We were lucky enough to have Ziggy and Alex join us on Thursday morning and help us with the painting.

During the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program on Thursdays, We have made fruit skewers and pizza scrolls with Ms Scimone. It has been so fun to be able to chop and cook the fresh ingredients and eat the food afterwards!! Yummy !!

CHESS TOURNAMENT

Term 3:

1st Place: Charlie Wang

=2nd Place: Pearl McIntosh

=2nd Place: Marley Oehlers

Our Term 3 tournament was once again a round robin event – but this time with 8 players, as Orlando joined chess at the beginning of the term. The event was won by Charlie with a perfect score of 7/7! Charlie’s improvement has been enormous this term, and the way he consistently dismantled his opponents was very noticeable and equally impressive. He calculates variations very well with both accuracy and discipline. In equal second place were Pearl and Marley. Marley had a good, consistent tournament this term, while Pearl entered the final round with 5/6 needing only a draw with Fidel to secure second place. However, Fidel played well, defeating Pearl, meaning that Marley was able to catch her and share second place with Pearl. Ant also continued his improvement doubling his score from Term 2!

Overnewton College Interschool

6th Place:

6.0 Charlie WANG (1st Under 11)

4.5 Lachlan HAMILTON

3.0 Fidel LUZZ

3.0 Thomas HARCOURT

1.5 Anthony HARCOURT

In the final week of Term 3, St Augustine’s participated in another interschool – this time at Overnewton College. This tournament was by far St Augustine’s best result in an interschool, and the team broke several small records. The tournament had 78 players from 7 different schools and the St Augustine’s team are now fully entrenched consistent performers in these events, taking their points through the middle boards of the tournament rather than the lower boards. The standout was Charlie – who won six of his seven games, finishing in =2nd place (out of the entire field of 78!). His official score after countback was 4th place (out of 78). This won him the 1st Place Under 11 medal. This is by far the best individual result from a St Augustine’s player in an interschool, and the first time at St Augustine’s player has won a medal in an interschool. The entire team were thrilled for Charlie and I couldn’t be more proud of him! The other player who also broke a record was Lachlan – who scored 4.5 points (=16th place, 17th after countback). Lachlan had a very impressive tournament, defeating several strong players from other schools. These two scores are the first scores above 4 points from St Augustine’s players. All in all, a wonderful result for the school, and one that all players should be proud of!
