Saltbush Excursion

Supporting an important cause

The Real World Year 10 students visited Saltbush Balnarring as the students wanted to donate Bird Boxes they had made during Term 2. This was a part of their Community Service project in this subject. Saltbush was chosen as this is a place that works with families who need respite or a place for women to shelter when their lives are feeling threatened. Students felt the connection to this place as wanting to give back to one of the Kildare Ministries’ works that they had heard about at Marian College.

The time at Saltbush was spent listening to Sr Joan speak about the foundations of how this place came about and the work that is done during the year. Sr Joan explained to the students that Saltbush is not government funded and that donations are what are really needed.

The Year 10 Real World students were also able to donate $250 that they had previously raised from the Father’s Day stall. Knowing that this money was able to fund a family staying in one of the cabins at the site was also worth the trip down to Balnarring. The bird boxes were happily accepted by Sr Joan and Megan, one of the administrative staff at Saltbush. The tour of the property was well received by the students as they could see that the bird boxes will be a great addition to the many trees that surround the area in which the cabins are located. Coming across a koala high in one of the trees was also very exciting.

The students were very grateful for the opportunity to visit Saltbush and are hoping to be able to do some more work with them in the future.
