CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week is the final week focusing on persuasive texts and this week we are looking at persuasive devices. These may include alliteration, rhetorical questions, statistics, emotive language, high modality, repetition and opinions.

VOCABULARY

Alliteration is the repetition of the same or similar kinds of sounds at the beginning of words or in stressed syllables.

Rhetorical questions are questions that the writer does not expect to have answered either because there is no answer or the answer is obvious.

Statistics are used when a writer is looking to convince and persuade via logic. These include facts and data that are used as evidence to prove a point.

Emotive language is a type of language that is designed to evoke an emotional response such as anger or sadness or joy.

Modality is used to indicate the degree to which something is certain, possible or improbable.

Repetition - When important words or phrases are repeated in a text, they are more likely to stick in the reader’s mind.

Opinions are a view or judgement formed about something but are not necessarily based on facts. We want to encourage students to have strong opinions (that can be backed up by solid reasoning!).
