CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Reading we are learning to build our comprehension strategies by

making connections to evaluate texts.

VOCABULARY

Text to Self Connections

A Text to Self Connection is when the reader connects the story to their own experiences, feelings or life.

An example could be: The book Diary of a Wimpy Kid reminds me of my own older brother. Greg’s older brother Rodrick loves Heavy Metal music and so does my brother. Rodrick loves playing jokes on Greg and my brother does too!

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Ask your child to choose a text that they are reading, and answer the following Text to Self questions (or they can create their own):

What does the text remind you of?

Do you understand how the character feels?

What does the setting in the text remind you of?

Has something similar in the text ever happened to you?
