Dean of Middle Years

A student commented to me that they did not like equations, so they were not going to study them. I explained to her that I don’t like cleaning the bathroom, but it has to be cleaned. It reminded me that sometimes you need to dig in and just do it. In a school setting embracing the learning pit, that challenging zone where uncertainties and frustration thrive, fosters profound growth. It’s in this space of discomfort and unfamiliarity that true understanding and resilience are forged. The pit teaches us valuable lessons of perseverance, problem-solving and adaptability. By confronting difficulties, learners cultivate the skills needed to navigate the complexities of the real world. The pit is an indispensable part of the learning journey, where struggles transform into triumphs.

As I complete the year as Dean of Middle Years, I am grateful that learning growth is not confined to students alone. I, too, have embarked on a continuous journey of learning and development over my 30-year career, and this has continued this year. I have had opportunities to expand my knowledge and refine my skills. I am currently completing my Master of Educational Leadership and every weekend I navigate research, writing, APA7 referencing, deadlines, feedback, re-writing, word limits, and considerable self-doubt. Even with this agony I know I am learning, and I know it will make me a better teacher and leader.

A culture of improvement extends beyond the classroom walls. It permeates the entire school community, fostering an environment where everyone plays a crucial role in the educational journey. I am thankful for my fellow teachers and staff members, parents and students who contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our school. As we approach the end of the school year, let’s take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to each member of the school community. I work with a number of incredible educators who have inspired me to do better and be better.

I wish all students a wonderful break, and all the best for their educational journey next year. I pray that this extends to a lifetime of learning and experiences.
