Australian Jobs Report is available now

The National Career Institute have just released the 2023 version of Australian Jobs, which is a pretty good overview of the state of the labour market with some up-to-date advice for finding and securing work.

 

Australian Apprenticeships Website

The Australian Apprenticeships website is now up and running, replacing the AATIS and AAPathways.

It has a great section allowing exploration of apprenticeships in Priority Occupations and retains the quizzes and preparation checklist.

Careers with STEM

 

GiST – Girls in STEM Toolkit

The Girls in STEM Toolkit (GiST) has recently updated their website with a brand new look, simplifying navigation to make it easier to find what’s important to you.

For teachers, they have added fifteen new lesson plans, including a thought-provoking lesson on bias in STEM careers, designing simple machines and visualising climate change.

For all, particularly female students with an interest in STEM areas, there are lots of resources available, including stories from women in STEM, a careers quiz, and resources for families. Find out more: https://www.thegist.edu.au/

This program and funding aims to help Victorians get back to work and employers find the right staff for their business. More information is available on the Jobs Victoria webpage. Of particular interest is the:

  • Apprenticeships Victoria partnership with the Victorian Government, major project employers, and the TAFE and training system to deliver more job opportunities for apprentices and trainees looking to start a career in the construction and infrastructure sector. Free TAFE – Enabling access to free or low fee training in priority areas

Free TAFE covers tuition fees for eligible students. From 2024, Free TAFE will offer more than 80 courses across growth industries, including Early Childhood Education, Health, Construction & Infrastructure, Agriculture, Hospitality and Community & Disability Services.

The Victorian Government Free TAFE website is an ideal starting point for exploring this great option. 

The following courses have been included as part of the 2024 Free TAFE course list. The Victorian Skills Gateway lists courses that currently receive government funding and the new Free TAFE courses will appear on the Gateway.

  • Diploma of Youth Work
  • Cert IV in Kitchen Management
  • Diploma of Hospitality Management
  • Cert III in Tourism

 Nuclear-Powered Submarine Student Pathways

The Australian Government is investing $128.5 million to support 4,001 commencing Commonwealth supported places (CSPs) over 2024 to 2027.Growing a qualified and experienced STEM workforce to support Australia’s nuclear-powered submarine enterprise is a national priority.  The scale of work required to support the enterprise will be unlike any previous shipbuilding program in Australian history and will deliver career and job opportunities for generations.

These additional places will develop a pipeline of highly-skilled STEM graduates who will strengthen Australia’s sovereign capabilities.

 

In Victoria, the following two universities were allocated places in relevant STEM areas for 2024:

Students are encouraged to browse Nuclear-Powered Submarine Student Pathways to find out more about this initiative, all the tertiary institutions that have been allocated places, and read through the FAQ’s too.   

Note: The University of Melbourne very recently introduced its Science (Nuclear-Powered Submarine Student Pathways) course through VTAC.  The Bachelor of Science (Nuclear-Powered Submarine Student Pathways) provides the opportunity for students to undertake studies that meet the future Science workforce needs of the Australian Submarine Agency. Students who graduate from the Bachelor of Science (Nuclear-Powered Submarine Student Pathways) may choose to enrol in the Masters of Science in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Data Science or Physics.Students are encouraged to browse Bachelor of Science.

The Australian Government is also offering STEM cadetships to eligible participants, comprising 60 paid work placement days (approx. $12,000 per annum), reimbursement for books and resources up to $1,000, a $3,000 bursary, mentorships and career opportunities in Defence.  Eligibility to apply requires applicants to:

  • be an Australian citizen
  • be enrolled in a relevant STEM degree
  • have already completed at least 12 months of the degree at the time of the application

must still have at least 12 months of the course to complete at the time of the cadetship program commencement.

Looking for labour market information that is up-to-date and underpins the Victorian Skills Plan? 

Check out the VSA Employment Forecast Dashboard which includes data by occupation, industry and region, specific to the Victorian economy.

There is scheduled to be lesson plans, teachers guide and parent/carer guide available soon in the new Department of Education’s Arc Learning platform.

The national website Your Career https://yourcareer.gov.au/ is a must visit for anyone interested in obtaining info about career ideas, training, job readiness, support services and career resources. It will also be the main resource used for Career of the Week featured on the weekly Career notice.

Defence Force Roles and Resources

Students considering roles in the Australian Defence Force are encouraged to make use of the ADF Careers website, this will ensure you have the most up-to-date information on the opportunities available in the Army, Air Force and Navy.

There is also a designated Parent/Guardian webpage and at the bottom of the page you can download a Parent/Guardian Guide.

The ADF Career Guide for Students and Career Advisor Guide are also really helpful summaries.
