STEM Term 1

Hello and welcome to STEM for 2024! I am so excited for what is in store this year. This term, our focus is Physical Sciences - students will participate in a range of investigations to gain an understanding of a range of science concepts. To show their understanding, students will dust off their engineering caps and use the Design Thinking Process to create a designed solution. 

The FUSE Cup is starting up again this year for Grade 5/6s with a few changes. Nintendo have changed their licensing process and because of this ROCKET LEAGUE will be the first competition in Term 1 with JUST DANCE in Term 2. 

Try-outs will be held for Grade 5/6s at Lunch on Thursdays. 

Prep

A big warm welcome to our Preps! This term in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) we will be learning about Physical Science and how things move. We will be exploring different forces (push, pull) through a range of play experiences. Later, students will showcase their learnings by creating a toy with a push/pull force.

Grade 1/2

This term, we are learning about Physical Sciences and how things move. We are learning about forces and what can affect different forces, like friction. Students will be immersed in a range of investigations to decide which materials and surfaces are the best to make a vehicle that can travel the furthest distance! 

Grade 3/4

This term, we are learning about Physical Sciences involving push, pull, friction and non-contact forces. Students will investigate the effect of forces on the behaviour on an object and how friction can affect movement. Students will also explore the forces of attraction and repulsion between magnets. 

Grade 5/6

This term, we are learning about Physical Sciences and light in particular! Students will investigate shadows and will classify materials as transparent, opaque or translucent. They will use mirrors to learn more about how light reflects and conduct experiments to explore refraction. Students will then showcase their understandings collaboratively - they may choose to create a mirror maze or a shadow puppet show!
