STEAM News

Year 1 students have been exploring light and shadows. This week they finished making their puppets and with a partner performed a shadow puppet show for their peers.

Year 2 students have been creating Lego marble mazes as part of their work in Science on ‘pushes and pulls’. Students were encouraged to create short cuts, ‘dead ends’, curves and ramps to guide their marble from the start to the finish line. They had lots of fun working with a partner to create these mazes.

Year 3 students have been exploring the different sources of heat and this week discussed the dangers posed by exposure to UV rays. Students used special beads which change colour when exposed to UV light. They predicted whether UV light can penetrate water, go through paper or still be around when we are in the shade. They also covered the beads in SPF 50 and found out that we still need to be sun smart in Australia because the beads still changed colour.

The Year 4 students recently painted their cans to make their ‘bee hotels’. They placed bamboo inside the cans to make safe homes for the bees to find. A big thank you to Jerry our maintenance man, for building the frame on which our ‘bee hotels’ have been placed. They are now outside in the garden on the Ruby St side of the school. We look forward to seeing many more bees come to our garden beds throughout next year when we begin planting seeds. Thank you also to Mrs Johnson for the idea and to all the families who sent in bamboo for this project, especially the family of Lucy Douglas Lenders in Foundation A.

Year 5 students have been coding Micro: Bits. They have created dice, name tags, light/sound sensors and a pet hamster which expresses emotions when various inputs and activated.

Year 6 students had their cardboard games STEAM exhibition this week. All students in the school came through and had lots of fun playing skee ball, wack-a-mole, pinball and claw machine. Several students even had ticket booths! We are very proud of how the students worked in groups over several weeks, to design, problem solve and create games that were enjoyed by students and teachers throughout the school.
