News from the Library at ECP/Novinky z knihovny ECP

Along with everyone at ECP, the move has been a challenge for the library.  However, we are delighted that we have now set up our new temporary library in the Annexe. We have brought the majority of our collection with us and have a small cosy library with space for students based in the Annexe to be able to study, relax or work during break times.  

We are delighted with our new online library catalogue, Accessit, which enables staff and students to browse our catalogue and reserve books that they would like. Every day, our library team takes books that have been reserved to Elektra and brings back books that have been returned to the Book Return Box located in the student locker room there.

We are thrilled that ECP students continue to demonstrate their dedication to regular reading as 67% of student’s made their first reading target this year and so far students have read over 480 books amounting to over 31 million words!     If you want to know more about our reading programme, have a look at our The ECP Guide to Accelerated Reader here.

Tak jako pro všechny ostatní, tak i pro knihovnu bylo stěhování velkou výzvou. Jsme však rádi, že se nám podařilo zřídit naši novou dočasnou knihovnu v budově Annex. Většinu naší sbírky knih jsme si vzali s sebou a máme malou útulnou knihovnu s prostorem pro studenty v Annexu, kde mohou o přestávkách studovat, odpočívat nebo pracovat.

Jsme potěšeni naším novým online katalogem knihovny Accessit, který umožňuje zaměstnancům a studentům procházet náš katalog a rezervovat si knihy, které by chtěli. Náš tým knihovny každý den shromažďuje knihy, které byly rezervovány studenty v Elektře, a doručuje je tam. Studenti v Elektře vrací knihy do schránky na vrácení knih, která se nachází v místní šatně.

Jsme nadšeni, že studenti ECP nadále prokazují svou oddanost pravidelné četbě, protože 67 % studentů si tento rok stanovilo svůj první čtenářský cíl a studenti zatím přečetli více než 480 knih v rozsahu více než 31 milionů slov! Poetry Winner/Vítěz soutěže v poezii

Every year, the library runs a poetry competition in collaboration with the English Department to select a poem to submit to the Council of British International Schools annual poetry competition. This year, the theme was: A Future to be Proud of.   We were thrilled with the range and quality of poems submitted making it a difficult decision but the poem finally chosen was written by Šimon Theodore Donovan in Year 3 and you can read it below:

Ve spolupráci s oddělením anglického jazyka knihovna každoročně pořádá básnickou soutěž s cílem vybrat báseň, kterou předloží do každoroční básnické soutěže organizace COBIS (Council of British International Schools). Letošní téma znělo: Budoucnost, na kterou můžeme být hrdí. Byli jsme nadšeni rozsahem a kvalitou zaslaných básní, takže rozhodnutí bylo těžké, ale nakonec vybranou báseň napsal Šimon Theodore Donovan z 3. ročníku a můžete si ji přečíst níže:

Kolovrat, Kolovrat,

What have you in store?

Dlouhý okvětní plátek mořeby Isabel Allende

I would like to recommend a book by Isabel Allende called Dlouhý okvětní plátek moře. It is a novel written by a Spanish author set mainly in Spain and Chile. It is a novel with amazing, colourful, brave and ordinary characters who live through the Civil War in Spain in the end of the 1930s. Some manage to escape to Chile and have to find their place in, what is for them, a brand new world. What were their lives like in Chile? Were they accepted? And did they ever get to see their native land? It is another way to learn a little bit about other countries' histories through the author's eyes. A great read! 

Ráda bych vám doporučila knihu od Isabel Allende s názvem Dlouhý okvětní plátek moře. Jde o román španělské autorky odehrávající se převážně ve Španělsku a Chile. Je to román s úžasnými, barevnými, odvážnými a obyčejnými postavami, které prožívají občanskou válku ve Španělsku na konci 30. let. Některým se podaří uprchnout do Chile a musí najít své místo v pro ně zcela novém světě. Jaký byl jejich život v Chile? Byli přijati? A viděli někdy svou rodnou zemi? Je to další způsob, jak se očima autora dozvědět něco málo o historii jiných zemí. Skvělé čtení!

Someone Else's Shoes by JoJo Moyes

My recommendation for this month is Someone Else's Shoes by JoJo Moyes which was published this year.  I must confess to being a big fan of JoJo Moyes, having previously enjoyed The Giver of Stars and Me Before You.  Mojes worked as a journalist for 10 years before becoming a full time writer and she is a fantastic storyteller.  Jodi Picault describes the book as “A delightful reverse-Cinderella story of two women who seem polar opposites – until circumstance forces them to experience each other’s lives.”  Initially I found one of the characters, Nisha Cantor, so repellent that I struggled to continue reading but I think that this is exactly how Mojes wants you to respond to this character. As you learn more about each character’s background, you find yourself rooting for them and looking forward to picking up on their part of the story. Each chapter is told from a different character’s perspective, gradually weaving the story into a whole. There is a great plot which drives the story forward, but for me, the most enjoyable aspect of the book is the relationship that grows between the different women in the story.  Why not give it a try if you’re looking for a feel-good read!  

Moje doporučení pro tento měsíc je dílo Someone Else's Shoes od JoJo Moyes, které vyšlo letos. Musím přiznat, že jsem velkým fanouškem JoJo Moyes, protože jsem si předtím užila The Giver of Stars a Me Before You. Moyes pracovala 10 let jako novinářka, než se stala spisovatelkou na plný úvazek a je fantastickou vypravěčkou. Jodi Picault popisuje knihu jako „Nádherný příběh z obrácené Popelky o dvou ženách, které vypadají jako polární protiklady – dokud je okolnosti nedonutí zažít život toho druhého.“ Zpočátku mi připadala jedna z postav, Nisha Cantor, tak odpudivá, že jsem měla problém číst dál, ale myslím, že přesně takto autorka chce, aby čtenáři na tuto postavu reagovali. Jakmile se dozvíte o jednotlivých postavách více, zjistíte, že jim fandíte a těšíte se, až se dozvíte více o jejich části příběhu. Každá kapitola je vyprávěna z pohledu jiné postavy, čímž se příběh postupně propojuje do celku. Je tam skvělá zápletka, která žene příběh kupředu, ale pro mě je nejpříjemnějším aspektem knihy vztah, který roste mezi různými ženami v příběhu. Proč to nezkusit, pokud hledáte příjemné čtení!

Dokud dýchám by Aleš Novotný

Dokud dýchám, released in 2023, is a book written by the author Aleš Novotný and is a sequel to the book Pamatuj na smrt, which was released in 2019. Other books written by the author include Já smrt and Zvěsti, which are all in the thriller and young adult genre.  This book is about a small town which experiences a series of unfortunate events in a short time. The story is told from the perspective of a high school student and how he deals with the murder of his classmate, which happened in the previous book, and the range of emotions that come with that. Then another murder happens which kickstarts the second book along with the kidnapping of a small girl. The police struggle to solve the murder and the kidnapping of the young girl, which builds up tension throughout the book because of the criminal on the loose and the unknown threats that could come with that.

The author leaves subtle hints in the text that slowly unravel into the outcome of the book. This creates suspense and encourages the reader to continue reading. At the same time, the author purposefully withholds information from us to also build up tension and give the reader a moment of realisation at the end of the book when the truth is revealed. I think that all of this plays a major part in the book and the author's style of writing, because there is a sense of unknown added to the story. Strong emotions are also portrayed by the main character in the book. The detail in which his emotions are described adds relatability to the character as well as a better understanding of them and how they respond to different situations. The language used in the book is easy to understand and appeals to the intended audience. The book includes a prologue which adds mystery and unfamiliarity to the plot in the context of the previous book. The epilogue, on the other hand, clarifies what has happened and leaves space for the possibility of another sequel. The second book is heavily based on the first book. Therefore, it is better to read them in order to fully understand the circumstances in which the characters are in because of all the flashbacks. Overall, I think that the books are very entertaining with the right balance of tension and resolution.

Kniha Dokud dýchám, vydaná v roce 2023, je dílo autora Aleše Novotného a je pokračováním knihy Pamatuj na smrt, která vyšla v roce 2019. Mezi další knihy tohoto autora patří Já smrt a Zvěsti, které všechny patří do žánru thriller pro dospívající. Tato kniha vypráví o městečku, které v krátké době zažije řadu nešťastných událostí. Příběh je vyprávěn z pohledu středoškoláka a toho, jak se vypořádává s vraždou svého spolužáka, která se stala v předchozí knize, a škálou emocí, které s tím souvisí. Pak dojde k další vraždě, která odstartuje druhou knihu spolu s únosem mladé dívky. Policie se snaží vyřešit vraždu a únos mladé dívky, což v průběhu knihy hromadí napětí kvůli zločinci na svobodě a neznámým hrozbám, které s tím mohou souviset.

Autor zanechává v textu jemné náznaky, které se pomalu rozplétají do vyvrcholení knihy. To vytváří napětí a povzbuzuje čtenáře, aby pokračoval ve četbě. Zároveň nám autor cíleně zatajuje informace, aby vybudoval napětí a dopřál čtenáři na konci knihy okamžik uvědomění, když vyjde pravda najevo. Myslím, že to vše hraje hlavní roli v tomto příběhu a v autorově stylu psaní, protože to přináší pocit neznáma. Silné emoce ztvárňuje v knize i hlavní hrdina. Detail, ve kterém jsou jeho emoce popsány, dodává postavě blízkost a také lepší porozumění reakcím na různé situace. Jazyk použitý v knize je snadno srozumitelný a cílové publikum osloví. Kniha obsahuje prolog, který dodává zápletce v kontextu předchozí knihy tajemnost a neznámost. Epilog naopak objasňuje, co se stalo a nechává prostor pro možnost dalšího pokračování. Druhá kniha přímo navazuje na první knihu. Proto je lepší si je přečíst, abyste plně porozuměli okolnostem, ve kterých se postavy nacházejí, kvůli všem flashbackům. Celkově si myslím, že knihy jsou velmi zábavné a nabízí správné vyvážení napětí a rozuzlení.

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

The Atlas Six, is the first book from the trilogy written by Olivie Blake initially published in January 2020. Blake, whose actual name is Alexene Farol Follmuth, is an American author who primarily writes fantasy books. Some more of her popular book include The magician's Assistant (2020) and Stone Throw (2020)

The Atlas Six is about a secret Alexandrian society which holds the most important lost knowledge of all human history. Each decade, six magicians with very rare talents are chosen to be candidates for membership of the society. The most recent candidates are Parisa, a telepath who can read minds and uses her mind for seduction. Reina, an introverted naturalist who can, to some extent, control nature. Tristan, a man misunderstood by his father who can see through illusions. Callum, a manipulative empath who uses his powers to get what he wants. And last, but not least, Nico and Libby, former academic rivals who have the ability to manipulate the laws of physics. 

The candidates are chosen by a caretaker called Atlas Blakely, who explains to them that they will have one year to research and experiment with their powers and prove themselves as worthy. At the end of the year, five magicians will qualify and one will be eliminated.

In the course of the year, various events unfold. The magicians study the information from the library, conduct in-depth research on their powers, experiment with space and time, and bend their minds. Even though the candidates don't want to, they have to make friends to avoid being eliminated by the others and have someone to collaborate with. This results in the creation of strong relationships and collaboration in experiments and defending the society from its attackers which ultimately helps these young magicians slowly reach their full potential. 

Throughout the story, secrets of the society and the mysterious Atlas Blakely are slowly and gradually revealed which leads to the magicians questioning the society and trying to reveal what Blakely is hiding and what the society actually is. 

The book is divided into multiple bigger chapters, which are then split into six smaller chapters. Each smaller chapter belongs to one of the magicians who narrates the story from their perspective in third person narration. 

I personally really like the way that the author was slowly revealing small secrets to us which built tension and suspense and made the plot much more interesting. Overall I liked the very tense and mysterious atmosphere. Another thing which I thought was very interesting was the narration form. I found it engaging, discovering the perspectives of each character and it was fascinating knowing how differently people with various mindsets and personalities view the same situation.

The only thing which I did not enjoy about this book was the long plot at the beginning which made me think that the entire book was going to be boring. But I was pleasantly surprised how the plot became very engaging and twisted. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to people who like reading fantasy books and people who enjoy a mysterious plot full of secrets.

Atlas Six je o tajné alexandrijské společnosti, která drží nejdůležitější ztracené znalosti celé lidské historie. Každé desetiletí je vybráno šest kouzelníků s velmi vzácným talentem, aby se stali kandidáty na členství v této společnosti. Nejnovějšími kandidáty jsou Parisa, telepatka, která umí číst myšlenky a používá svou mysl ke svádění; Reina, introvertní přírodovědkyně, která dokáže do jisté míry ovládat přírodu; Tristan, muž nepochopený svým otcem, který dokáže prokouknout iluze; Callum, manipulativní empat, který využívá své síly, aby získal to, co chce. V neposlední řadě jsou tu Nico a Libby, bývalí akademičtí rivalové, kteří mají schopnost manipulovat s fyzikálními zákony.

Kandidáty vybírá správce Atlas Blakely, který jim vysvětluje, že budou mít jeden rok na to, aby zkoumali a experimentovali se svými schopnostmi a dokázali, že jsou členství hodni. Na konci roku se kvalifikuje pět kouzelníků a jeden vypadne.

V průběhu roku probíhají různé akce. Kouzelníci studují informace z knihovny, provádějí hloubkový výzkum svých sil, experimentují s prostorem a časem a ohýbají svou mysl. I když kandidáti nechtějí, musí se spřátelit, aby je ostatní nevyřadili a měli s kým spolupracovat. Výsledkem je vytváření pevných vztahů a spolupráce při experimentech a obraně společnosti před útočníky, což nakonec pomáhá těmto mladým kouzelníkům pomalu dosáhnout jejich plného potenciálu.

V průběhu příběhu se pomalu a postupně odhalují tajemství společnosti a tajemného Atlase Blakelyho, což vede k tomu, že kouzelníci společnost zpochybňují a snaží se odhalit, co Blakely skrývá a co daná společnost vlastně je.

Kniha je rozdělena do několika větších kapitol, které jsou následně rozděleny do šesti menších podkapitol, z nichž každá patří jednomu z kouzelníků, který vypráví příběh ze své perspektivy ve vyprávění ve třetí osobě.

Osobně se mi moc líbí, jak nám autorka pomalu odhalovala malá tajemství, která budovala napětí, což činilo děj mnohem zajímavějším. Celkově se mi líbila velmi napjatá a tajemná atmosféra. Další věc, kterou jsem považovala za velmi zajímavou, byla forma vyprávění. Připadalo mi to poutavé, objevovat perspektivy každé postavy a bylo fascinující vědět, jak odlišně lidé s různým smýšlením a povahami pohlížejí na stejnou situaci.

Jediná věc, která se mi na této knize nelíbila, byla dlouhá zápletka na začátku, kvůli které jsem si myslel, že celá kniha bude nudná. Ale mile mě překvapilo, jak se děj stal velmi poutavým a zamotaným. Celkově jsem si čtení této knihy opravdu užila a doporučila bych ji lidem, kteří rádi čtou fantasy knihy a těm, kteří mají rádi tajemnou zápletku plnou tajemství.

The Spectrum Girl’s Survival Guide by Siena Castellon

This book is the perfect book on autism for teenage girls on the autism spectrum. Written by autism advocate Siena Castellon, who is on the spectrum herself, it shares advice for autistic girls to navigate a neurotypical world.

Because of the huge stigma of autism, the book helps autistic girls embrace their autism by listing the “superpowers” of the autistic brain and the importance of being oneself while masking to fit in. Masking can take a toll on mental health and cause a loss of identity.

It can serve as a manual for teenage girls who are within the spectrum. It covers lots of possible situations they may encounter and answers lots of questions they may have, helping them to cope with the enormousness of life out there.

The book also provides tips for taking care of oneself. Such as managing sensory overloads and lists some places that accommodate those that experience sensory overloads. How to take care of your body, emotions and mental health. Developing a fashion style that does not trigger any sensory sensitivities.

Many autistic teens need a lot of time to themselves but at the same time they want to feel a sense of belonging by being accepted by others. But they also have trouble keeping or making friends. So there is advice provided for socialising and making friends.

Having a crush on someone can be especially challenging for autistic teen girls. Romantic relationships and dating can be complicated as people rarely say what they mean. Which could make it hard to tell if someone is interested in you. 

Many autistic teens find the concept of gender roles confusing. Some lean towards being gender neutral. Some lean towards being a little bit of both. Some might not even feel like they identify with the sex they were born with. Autistic teens tend to have higher rates of gender dysphoria (distress caused by a mismatch between someone’s biological sex and their gender identity). While neurotypical teens are able to suppress their gender dysphoria, it is harder for autistic teens to conform to societal norms. The chapter talks about coming out, transitioning and sexuality.

There are tips provided to survive in a school environment. These include managing an overstimulating environment, being organised and how to deal with bullying at school.

Aside from autism, other conditions co-occur in autistic teens. There are chapters on conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, dyslexia, dyspraxia, hypermobility and gastrointestinal disorders. Symptoms are listed and some school accommodations are suggested.

Social media can play a big role in teens’ lives. There is a chapter on navigating social media and the internet including internet safety, online purchases and coming across cyberbullying.

Actually, this book is not only helpful for teenage girls with autism but also for their parents, siblings, peers and people who work with them. It best explains how these girls feel when in various situations. It helps to understand their reactions and how to deal with them.

Tato kniha je perfektním dílem o autismu pro dospívající dívky s autistickým spektrem. Napsala ji obhájkyně autismu Siena Castellon, která je sama součástí spektra, a sdílí rady pro autistické dívky, jak se pohybovat v neurotypickém světě.

Kvůli obrovskému stigmatu autismu kniha pomáhá autistickým dívkám přijmout svůj autismus tím, že uvádí „superschopnosti“ autistického mozku a důležitost být sám sebou při maskování odlišností, aby dívky zapadly. Maskování si však může vybrat daň na duševním zdraví a způsobit ztrátu identity.

Kniha může sloužit jako příručka pro dospívající dívky, které mají poruchu autistického spektra. Pokrývá mnoho možných situací, se kterými se mohou setkat, a odpovídá na spoustu otázek, které mohou mít, a pomáhá jim vyrovnat se s ohromností života tam venku.

V knize najdete i rady, jak o sebe pečovat. Například zvládání smyslových přetížení a seznamy některých míst, která vyhovují těm, kteří zažívají smyslové přetížení. Jsou zde i rady, jak pečovat o své tělo, emoce a duševní zdraví, či jak rozvíjet módní styl, který nespouští žádnou smyslovou citlivost.

Mnoho dospívajících s autismem potřebuje hodně času pro sebe, ale zároveň chtějí cítit sounáležitost tím, že je ostatní přijímají. Mají však také problém udržet si nebo navázat přátelství, a kniha proto obsahuje i rady pro socializaci a navazování přátelství.

Zamilovat se do někoho může být pro autistické dospívající dívky obzvláště náročné. Romantické vztahy a randění mohou být komplikované, protože lidé jen zřídka říkají, co si myslí, což může ztížit zjištění, zda o vás má někdo zájem.

Mnoho autistických dospívajících považuje koncept genderových rolí za matoucí. Někteří se přiklánějí k genderově neutrální identifikaci a k tomu, aby byli tak trochu obojí. Někteří možná ani nemají pocit, že se ztotožňují s pohlavím, se kterým se narodili. Autističtí dospívající mají tendenci mít vyšší míru genderové dysforie (problémy způsobené nesouladem mezi biologickým pohlavím a genderovou identitou). Zatímco neurotypickí teenageři jsou schopni potlačit svou genderovou dysforii, pro autistické teenageři je těžší přizpůsobit se společenským normám. Kapitola hovoří o coming outu, trans stavům a sexualitě.

Publikace přináší také tipy, jak přežít ve školním prostředí. Patří mezi ně zvládání příliš podnětného prostředí, organizovanost a způsob, jak se vypořádat se šikanou ve škole.

Kromě autismu se u autistických dospívajících vyskytují i další stavy. Jsou zde kapitoly o stavech jako je ADHD, úzkost, dyslexie, dyspraxie, hypermobilita a gastrointestinální poruchy. Příznaky jsou uvedeny a jsou navržena některá opatření ve školách.

Sociální média mohou hrát v životě dospívajících velkou roli. Je zde i kapitola o navigaci na sociálních sítích a internetu, včetně bezpečnosti na internetu, online nákupů a setkání s kyberšikanou.

e skutečnosti tato kniha není užitečná pouze pro dospívající dívky s autismem, ale také pro jejich rodiče, sourozence, vrstevníky a lidi, kteří s nimi pracují. Velmi dobře vysvětluje, jak se tyto dívky cítí v různých situacích, a pomáhá pochopit jejich reakce a jak se s nimi vypořádat.

I do love a crime novel – Ian Rankin, Richard Osman, John Grisham, P D James, to name but a few on the bookshelves at home – and every year when I go on the school’s Berlin Trip, I buy myself a German language ‘Krimi’. I’ve become a fan of Klaus-Peter Wolf, whose stories are based in Ostfriesland and the islands off the German coast. This summer holiday, my wife and I were near that part of Germany, so I thought I would pick up another book in the German language as one of my ‘holiday reads’, but this time I chose to branch out to a different author and, indeed, genre: Helix: sie werden uns ersetzen by Marc Elsberg, considers a world in which genetic manipulation is threatening to get out of hand. No longer confined to the realms of improving production in agriculture, now it seems that genetically engineered embryos are being offered to parents who are willing to be part of an experiment to produce ‘superior’ offspring. If you know German, you will appreciate the chilling implication of the second part of the title - (and if you don’t, ‘sie werden uns ersetzen’ means ‘they will replace us’). I’m still working my way through this one as my just-before-sleep read. Our summer travels took us to France too, so I felt that I should get myself a French language ‘polar’ (= crime novel en français) in order to see if the French can write anywhere near as well as the Brits and the Germans. 

Mám rád kriminální romány – Ian Rankin, Richard Osman, John Grisham, P. D. James, abych vyjmenoval alespoň některé autory, jejichž díla mám doma na policích – a každý rok, když jedu na školní výlet do Berlína, koupím si „Krimi“ v němčině. Stal jsem se fanouškem Klause-Petera Wolfa, jehož příběhy se odehrávají v Ostfrieslandu a na ostrovech u německého pobřeží. O těchto letních prázdninách jsme byli s manželkou poblíž této části Německa, a tak jsem si řekl, že si vezmu další knihu v německém jazyce jako součást své „prázdninové četby“, ale tentokrát jsem se rozhodl odbočit k jinému autorovi a vlastně i žánru: Helix: sie werden uns ersetzen od Marca Elsberga. Kniha přináší úvahy o světě, ve kterém hrozí, že se genetická manipulace vymkne kontrole. Nyní se zdá, že geneticky upravovaná embrya jsou nabízena rodičům, kteří jsou ochotni být součástí experimentu s cílem produkovat „nadřazené“ potomky. Pokud umíte německy, oceníte mrazivý nádech druhé části názvu - (a pokud ne, 'sie werden uns ersetzen' znamená 'nahradí nás'.) Touto knihou se stále propracovávám a čtu ji vždy před spaním. Naše letní cesty nás zavedly také do Francie, a tak jsem měl pocit, že bych si měl pořídit francouzské krimi ‚polar‘ (= kriminální román en français), abych zjistil, jestli Francouzi umí psát stejně dobře jako Britové a Němci.

The book Dans La Brume Ecarlate by Nicolas Lebel proves that they can. During a couple of days of impenetrably dense fog in Paris, bodies of young women are discovered. Not only are the bodies drained of their blood, the victims also bear the marks of two puncture wounds in the neck. Rumours of Dracula naturally begin to circulate, especially when the finger of suspicion begins to point towards the Rumanian Embassy. I’m still reading this one also, but only during daylight hours.

Kniha Dans La Brume Ecarlate autora Nicolase Lebela dokazuje, že mohou. Během několika dnů neprostupně husté mlhy v Paříži jsou objevena těla mladých žen. Nejen, že jsou těla zbavena krve, oběti také nesou známky dvou bodných ran na krku. Pověsti o Drákulovi se přirozeně začnou šířit, zvláště když prst podezření začne směřovat k rumunské ambasádě. Ještě jsem knihu nedočetl, čtu ji pouze za denního světla.

Just the other week I finished a very entertaining and thought-provoking book based in Istanbul: 10 minutes and 38 seconds in this strange world by Elif Shafak. Recommended to me by Ms Turneberova in our library, I found this to be quite a compelling read. It seems that after death, our brains can continue to function for up to a further 10 minutes and 38 seconds. This book describes the reflections on her life during this time by a murdered prostitute.  Istanbul has always held an attraction for me, and despite this book beginning with a murder there, and the ensuing narrative dealing with the struggles of living in the city, this attraction is by no means diminished. 

Zrovna minulý týden jsem dokončil velmi zábavnou a podnětnou knihu situovanou v Istanbulu: 10 minut a 38 sekund v tomto podivném světě autorky Elif Shafak. Doporučila mi ji kolegyně Turneberová z naší knihovny a zjistil jsem, že je to docela poutavé čtení. Zdá se, že po smrti může náš mozek fungovat ještě dalších 10 minut a 38 sekund.Tato kniha popisuje úvahy o životě zavražděné prostitutky v této době. Istanbul mě vždy lákal, a navzdory této knize, která začíná vraždou, a následnému vyprávění pojednávajícím o bojích o život v tomto městě, se pro mne jeho poutavost nesnížila.

Getting back to my summer reading, I can vouch for these two books by British authors: The Natural Health Service by Isabel Hardman and Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker.  Both shed interesting and informative light on ways we can help ourselves to live healthier, happier and more fulfilled lives. Both of them are available from the school library, and are well worth reading. You don’t have to read them sequentially, rather, you can scan through the index and/or contents pages and then simply dip into whatever catches your attention. The sleep book, if you’ll forgive the pun, is a real eye-opener.

So, whilst you might have gained the impression from the first few books I mentioned, that I have a fascination with death and disaster, I hope that the final two recommendations show that, actually, I’m quite interested in living.

Když se vrátím ke svému letnímu čtení, mohu se zaručit za tyto dvě knihy od britských autorů: The Natural Health Service od Isabel Hardman a Why We Sleep od Matthewa Walkera. Oba vrhají zajímavé a poučné světlo na způsoby, jak si můžeme pomoci ke zdravějšímu, šťastnějšímu a naplněnějšímu životu. Obě díla jsou k dispozici ve školní knihovně a stojí za to si je přečíst. Nemusíte je číst postupně, spíše si můžete projít stránky rejstříku a/nebo obsahu a pak se jednoduše ponořit do toho, co upoutá vaši pozornost. Kniha spánku, pokud si odpustíte tuto slovní hříčku, opravdu otevírá oči.

Takže i když jste z prvních několika knih, které jsem zmínil, mohli získat dojem, že jsem fascinován smrtí a katastrofou, doufám, že poslední dvě doporučení ukazují, že mě vlastně docela zajímá život.
