Founders' Day/Den zakladatelů školy

Pražská křižovatka again provided the perfect setting for ECP’s Founders’ Day ceremony. A beautiful 14th century building, it has strong connections with our Czech Founder Patron, Václav Havel. We were celebrating the achievements of our students and remembering the people responsible for the opening of the English College in Prague in 1994. The theme of this year’s event was a reaffirmation of the school’s guiding principles on which the ethos of the College was founded and which have shaped the actions of the school since 1994.

Lord Holme was our first Chairman of Governors and he set out three Guiding Principles for the College, which he felt were essential for the sort of liberal humanistic education the College offers. They are:

1. The concept of developing each student’s full human potential. Genetic inheritance confers upon each of us a bundle of talents, aptitudes and responses and the life chances that go with them. It is one of the roles of education to identify and nurture these potentials and to raise them further so that each student realises his or her fullest self.
2. The ideal of a community built on reciprocity. A school is a community in miniature and it should be guided by mutual care and respect with each student “putting back” into the common store of good will and positive actions at least as much as they take out. Dealings between members of the school community should be characterised by care, consideration and courtesy.
3. The importance of international understanding, not just between the UK and the Czech Republic, with ties of language, literature and learning but throughout the larger family of mankind when so many shared problems can only be solved by shared values and shared actions. We are educating responsible and aware citizens of an ever-smaller inter-dependent world.

It is the second Guiding Principle of Reciprocity that The English College in Prague was celebrating at Founders’ Day 2023 with the launch of its Scholarship Fundraising Appeal. 

Although the ECP tries hard to keep the fees as low as possible they are still significant and that’s why the school offers substantial scholarships and bursaries to help make it possible for all who want to come to the College to be able to do so. Many ECP students benefit from these arrangements and the school wants to ensure that more will be able to do so in the future.

Richard Bassett was the guest speaker at the event in November 2023. He is an expert on Central Europe and from 2011-2016, he was a Governor of The English College in Prague. After graduating from Christ’s College Cambridge, he worked as a professional musician in Slovenia before becoming the Central and Eastern Europe correspondent of The Times in Eastern Europe during the closing decade of the Cold War.

A distinguished author, his books include Last Days in Old Europe : Trieste ´79, Vienna ´85, Prague ´89, (Penguin 2019) and For God and Kaiser, (Yale 2015).

Every year, on a day approximately half-way between the birthdays of our two Founder Patrons, President Václav Havel (5 October) and HRH Charles, Prince of Wales - now HM King Charles III - (14 November), the ECP celebrates Founders’ Day. Members of the whole school community – students, staff, parents, Governors, graduates and former staff – come together to remember the vision, determination and hard work of those who founded the English College, giving young people in Prague the educational opportunities still offered by the ECP today.

Pražská křižovatka byla opět skvělým místem pro oslavu Dne zakladatelů Anglického gymnázia. Tato krásná budova ze 14. století je spojena s naším českým zakladatelem, patronem Václavem Havlem. Na akci jsme oslavovali úspěchy našich studentů a vzpomínali na osobnosti zodpovědné za otevření naší školy v roce 1994. Tématem letošního ročníku bylo opětovné potvrzení vůdčích principů školy, na kterých byl založen étos Anglického gymnázia a které utvářely činnost školy od roku 1994.

Lord Holme byl prvním předsedou správní rady školy a stanovil tři zásady pro Anglické gymnázium, které považoval za klíčové pro liberální humanistické vzdělání, který škola nabízí. Jsou to:

• Koncepce rozvoje celkového lidského potenciálu každého studenta. Genetická výbava dává každému z nás soubor schopností, talentů a dispozic a spolu s nimi i určité životní vyhlídky. Jednou z úloh vzdělávání je rozpoznat tento potenciál, pečovat o něj a rozvinout jej tak, aby každý student/každá studentka dosáhl/a svých maximálních možností.
• Ideál komunity postavené na spolupráci. Škola je malou komunitou a měla by být prostoupena vzájemnou péčí a úctou. Každý student by měl do této společné pokladnice dobré vůle a pozitivní činnosti „vrátit“ alespoň tolik, kolik si vzal. Vzájemné jednání členů školní komunity by se mělo vyznačovat zájmem, ohleduplností a laskavostí.
• Důležitost porozumění mezi národy. Nejen mezi Spojeným královstvím a Českou republikou s vazbami jazykovými, literárními a vzdělávacími, ale i prostřednictvím velké rodiny všech lidí, v níž množství společných problémů může být vyřešeno pouze společnými hodnotami a společnými činy. Vychováváme odpovědné a uvědomělé občany stále se zmenšujícího a čím dál více provázaného světa.

U příležitosti Dne zakladatelů školy 2023 jsme si připomínali zejména druhou ze zmíněných zásad v souvislosti se zahájením výzvy k získávání prostředků pro stipendia.

Přestože se ECP snaží držet školné na co nejnižší možné úrovni, je stále značné, a proto škola nabízí mnohá stipendia a sociální příspěvky, aby umožnila dostupnost všem, kteří chtějí na Anglickém gymnáziu studovat. Mnoho studentů ECP z těchto opatření těží a škola chce zajistit, aby jich v budoucnu mohlo být ještě více.

V listopadu 2023 byl čestným hostem akce Richard Bassett, který je odborníkem na střední Evropu a v letech 2011-2016 byl členem správní rady Anglického gymnázia. Poté, co absolvoval Christ’s College Cambridge působil jako profesionální hudebník ve Slovinsku. Během závěrečné dekády studené války se pak stal korespondentem The Times pro střední a východní Evropu.

Pan Bassett je významný autor, mezi jehož díla patří Poslední dny ve staré Evropě: Terst ´79, Vídeň ´85, Praha ´89, (Penguin 2019) a Pro Boha a císaře, (Yale 2015).

Anglické gymnázium pořádá Den zakladatelů školy každým rokem, v období přibližně v polovině mezi narozeninami našich dvou zakládajících patronů, prezidenta Václava Havla (5. října) a Charlese, prince z Walesu - nyní Krále Karla II. (14. listopadu). Členové celé školní komunity – studenti, zaměstnanci, rodiče, správní rada, absolventi a bývalí zaměstnanci – se scházejí, aby si připomněli vizi, odhodlání a tvrdou práci těch, kteří školu založili a poskytli mladým lidem v Praze vzdělávací příležitosti, které Anglické gymnázium stále nabízí. 

Business trip to Pure Storage/Výlet do Pure Storage

The trip to the technological company, Pure Storage, with the Business Studies class was a very enlightening experience. The company sells storage hardware and related services to the biggest companies. We travelled to the beautiful Amazon building where Pure Storage is situated, and we met a friendly guide. We were seated in a very modern conference room and were offered delicious food. 

As part of the introduction, we were given some interesting overall statistics and the company's philosophy by Paul Melmon - the head of the Czech R&D centre. It was incredible to hear that the likelihood of them getting recommended by their customers was a staggering 80%+, which is even higher than in the case of Google or Microsoft. 

Then we were lectured by Dorothy Stankusova - R&D Talent Acquisitor, and Klara Gernesova - Engineering Talent Attraction Specialist. Pure Storage has a unique way of recruiting new employees, as they have up to ten rounds of interviews. This way, only the most talented, passionate, and dedicated people get the jobs. We were informed that this positively affects the motivation of the employees because they feel like they are part of a very smart and inclusive community. This part was especially interesting since we have covered work motivation in our business class. 

After that, programmers and recruiters presented their perspectives as well, which provided us with the ultimate view of the company from all angles. Overall, the trip was very enriching and gave us another experience of how the corporate world works. I am really looking forward to the next trip of a similar nature.

Tomáš Mašovský, Year 4

Výlet do technologické společnosti Pure Storage v rámci výuky předmětu obchod a podnikání byl velmi poučným zážitkem. Tato společnost prodává úložný hardware a související služby těm největším společnostem. Navštívili jsme krásnou budovu Amazonu, kde se nachází sídlo Pure Storage, a setkali jsme se s přátelským průvodcem. Byli jsme usazeni do velmi moderní konferenční místnosti, a dostali jsme i nabídku občerstvení.

Na úvod jsme absolvovali prezentaci o zajímavých celkových statistikách a filozofii společnosti od pana Paula Melmona, vedoucího českého R&D centra. Bylo neuvěřitelné se dozvědět, že pravděpodobnost, že zákazníci firmu doporučí, je na úrovni závratných 80 %+, což je ještě vyšší výsledek než v případě Googlu nebo Microsoftu.

Poté jsme si vyslechli přednášky Dorothy Stankušová na pozici R&D Talent Acquisitor a Kláry Gernesová, která ve firmě působí jako Engineering Talent Attraction Specialist. Pure Storage má unikátní způsob náboru nových zaměstnanců, protože organizuje až deset kol pohovorů. Tento postup zaručuje, že práci dostanou jen ti nejtalentovanější, nejzapálenější a nejoddanější lidé. Dozvěděli jsme se, že to pozitivně ovlivňuje motivaci zaměstnanců, protože se cítí být součástí velmi intelektuální a inkluzivní komunity. Tato část návštěvy byla obzvláště zajímavá, protože v hodinách obchodu a podnikání jsme se právě tématem pracovní motivace zabývali.

V poslední části nám své pohledy představili i programátoři a recruiteři, což formovalo celkový pohled na společnost ze všech úhlů. Tento výlet byl velmi obohacující a přinesl nám další zkušenost ohledně fungování firemního světa. Moc se těším na další výlet podobného charakteru.

St. Nicholas Day/Mikuláš

ECP students enjoyed visiting the children of the ZŠ Elektra primary school on St. Nicholas Day and playing Angel, Devil and St. Nicholas for them. At the moment we are sharing the same school building at Elektra.

Studenti ECP rádi  na Mikuláše navštívili děti ze ZŠ Elektra v roli anděla, čerta a Mikuláše. Momentálně s nimi sdílíme stejnou školní budovu Elektra.
