ECP mourns Karel Schwarzenberg/ECP vzpomíná na Karla Schwarzenberga

It was with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of our Czech Patron Karel Schwarzenberg. Karel Schwarzenberg became our Patron in 2013, following the death of Václav Havel thanks to whose initiative the English College in Prague was established in 1994.

Karel Schwarzenberg took his patronage of the ECP very seriously and, despite his poor health in recent years, he always tried to come to important school events – the College’s Founders’ Day and the Graduation Ceremony.

Anglické gymnázium reagovalo na úmrtí českého patrona školy, Karla Schwarzenberga, s velkým zármutkem. Karel Schwarzenberg se ujal patronátu Anglického gymnázia v roce 2013, po smrti Václava Havla, díky jehož iniciativě škola v roce 1994 vznikla.

Karel Schwarzenberg bral svou roli ve škole velmi vážně a navzdory zdravotním potížím se vždy snažil přijít na významné školní akce – na Dny zakladatelů školy nebo na Maturitní maturitní večery.

The French Exchange/Výměnný pobyt se školou ve Francii

In the first week of December, students in Years 1,2,3 and 4 had the privilege of hosting French students from the Lycée Notre Dame de Rezé. The exchange lasted a week, and it was certainly a pleasant and enjoyable experience for all the ECP students involved. Many of the French students were delighted to be in the fabulous, mediaeval city of Prague. The programme was action packed, as it consisted of visits to fascinating museums, a trip to the state opera and more. I myself thoroughly enjoyed the programme, it was not too hectic nor boring. The French students coming to Prague was a great opportunity for many ECP students to utilise and replenish their French. The exchange students that I had the pleasure of hosting, stated that they really enjoyed their stay and the whole organisation of the trip. Overall, the trip was a huge success, and everyone involved enjoyed themselves. Moreover, I would recommend participating in the exchange as it offers a wonderful opportunity to speak French, meet interesting people and travel to Nantes. I am hugely indebted to Mr Bleaks and the French lycée for putting on this great exchange, and I hope it continues in the future.

V prvním prosincovém týdnu měli studenti 1, 2., 3. a 4. ročníku skvělou příležitost hostit francouzské studenty z lycea Notre Dame de Rezé. Výměnný pobyt trval týden a pro všechny zúčastněné studenty ECP to byla jistě příjemná zkušenost, kterou si užili. Mnoho francouzských studentů potěšil pobyt v pohádkovém středověkém městě, jakým Praha je. Program byl nabitý, protože se skládal z návštěv fascinujících muzeí, výletu do státní opery a dalších. Sám jsem si program náramně užil, nebyl ani příliš hektický, ani nudný. Pobyt francouzských studentů v Praze byl pro mnoho studentů ECP vynikající příležitostí využít a doplnit si svou francouzštinu. Výměnní studenti, které jsem měl tu čest hostit, uvedli, že se jim pobyt i celá organizace zájezdu opravdu líbily. Celkově se výlet vydařil a všichni zúčastnění se dobře bavili. Rád bych tímto doporučil účast v tomto výměnném programu, protože nabízí skvělou příležitost hovořit francouzsky, potkat zajímavé lidi a cestovat do francouzského města Nantes. Jsem nesmírně zavázán panu Bleaksovi a francouzskému lyceu za uskutečnění této skvělé výměny a doufám, že bude pokračovat i v budoucnu.

The French Exchange was surely an experience that I was excited for but also scared of. I didn't expect anything bad to happen, but you know, it was my first time experiencing this. I was scared of speaking French all week and not understanding. However, I really enjoyed it and I would like to write about the things that were the best!

When the students came, I didn't really know how to start a conversation and what to expect, but as the week went on, I got more confident in speaking. I knew that they would not judge me, and that this was my opportunity to get better. Honestly, when we didn't fully understand each other, we spoke English a little bit, or we used the translator…

The exchange students were really nice. I could really see that they were really enjoying it. They were super happy when they saw snow. It was nice that Prague was full of snow at that time. It gave us the opportunity to go ice skating for example. There were a lot of us that went ice skating and it happened to be one of our favourite activities. We all became friends.

When I spoke to the students they all told me that they really enjoyed their trip here and that they are willing to come back! I can't wait to go to Nantes. I don't know what to expect but now I know that there is nothing to be scared of and that the most important thing is to enjoy it. It was one of the best weeks of my life!

Výměnný program se školou ve Francii byl zážitkem, ze kterého jsem byla nadšená, ale i trochu vyděšená. Nečekala jsem, že by se stalo něco špatného, ale bylo to prostě poprvé, co jsem něco takového zažila. Bála jsem se, že budu celý týden muset mluvit francouzsky a nebudu rozumět. Nicméně mě to nakonec moc bavilo a ráda bych zde vyzdvihla to nejlepší.Když naši francouzští partneři přijeli, pořádně jsem nevěděla, jak začít konverzaci a co mám očekávat, ale jak týden postupoval, získala jsem v hovoru větší jistotu. Věděla jsem, že mě nebudou soudit a že tohle je moje příležitost, jak se zlepšit. No a když jsme si úplně nerozuměli, mluvili jsme trochu i anglicky nebo jsme použili překladač…

Výměnní studenti byli opravdu milí. Bylo hezké vidět, že si to opravdu užívají. Byli velmi šťastní ze sněhové nadílky. Bylo příjemné, že Praha byla v té době plná sněhu. Dalo nám to možnost jít si třeba i zabruslit. Na bruslení nás společně chodilo hodně a byla to jedna z našich nejoblíbenějších aktivit. Všichni jsme se spřátelili.

Když jsem si s francouzskými studenty povídala, všichni mi řekli, že si výlet do Prahy velmi užili a že jsou ochotni přijet znovu! Nemůžu se dočkat, až pojedu do Nantes. Nevím, co přesně čekat, ale teď už vím, že se není čeho bát a že nejdůležitější je si to užít. Byl to jeden z nejlepších týdnů mého života!

Czech Universities Fair at ECP/Veletrh českých univerzit v ECP

On Thursday, 14th December, twenty representatives from Czech-based universities visited ECP to participate in The Czech Universities Fair. Representatives from universities VŠE, ČZU, VŠCHT, AAU, Prague City University, as well as several faculties of Charles University, introduced their Czech and English-speaking programmes to our Year 5 and Year 6 students. 

Our students had the opportunity to explore a diverse range of academic programmes and scholarships, engage in conversations with university admission officers and collect brochures, prospectuses, and other materials. Three of our former students came to represent their faculties, offering a peer-to-peer connection and thus providing a more personalised experience.

Ve čtvrtek 14.12. navštívilo 20 zástupců českých univerzit ECP, aby se zúčastnili Veletrhu českých vysokých škol. Zástupci VŠE, ČZU, VŠCHT, AAU, Prague Citi University a několika fakult Univerzity Karlovy představili našim páťákům a šesťákům své české i anglické programy. 

Naši studenti měli možnost se osobně seznámit s širokou škálou akademických programů a stipendií, zapojit se do rozhovorů s přijímacími úředníky a získat brožury, prospekty a další materiály. Tři naši bývalí studenti přišli zastupovat své fakulty, čímž svým vrstevníkům osobně ukázali, jak by asi zhruba mohla vypadat jejich budoucí kariéra.
