Year 11 Certificate III Fitness – Service in Action

On Monday, 30 March, the Year 11 Certificate III Fitness students had the privilege of assisting at the St Anthony’s Cross Country event (Prep to Year 6). This experience was more than just industry practice; it was also an opportunity for our students to live out service in action within our community. Through their involvement, students developed key industry skills in organisation, event delivery, and risk management while embodying the Franciscan charism of service and compassion.

From the moment they arrived, the students demonstrated initiative, teamwork, and a genuine commitment to helping others. They organised the water station, pinned place cards on participants, handed out Zooper Doopers, ran alongside younger students who needed encouragement, and efficiently packed up equipment at the end of the event. More importantly, they provided emotional support and a friendly, reassuring presence for the young athletes as they crossed the finish line. Whether celebrating achievements, offering words of encouragement, or supporting students experiencing big emotions, our Year 11s showed care, patience, and empathy in every interaction.

This experience highlights the importance of service learning and the role our students play in strengthening connections within our wider community. By stepping into real-world service opportunities, they are not only developing industry-ready skills but also learning the value of giving back, leading with compassion, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

The feedback from staff, parents, and participants was overwhelmingly positive, and it was clear that our students represented Mount Alvernia College with pride. They were a true reflection of our College values of Courage, Joy, Respect, and Service, demonstrating professionalism, kindness, and a spirit of generosity throughout the day.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr Stephen O’Driscoll, Mr Martin Walkie, and the staff and students of St Anthony’s for welcoming our students and providing this valuable opportunity to serve. This partnership is a wonderful example of how collaboration and community engagement create meaningful learning experiences and strengthen our shared commitment to service
