As we come to the close of a full and faith‑filled Term 1, we pause with grateful hearts to acknowledge the many blessings that have unfolded across our college community.

Easter invites us into the great mystery of hope - hope born not from perfection or ease, but from love that perseveres in a broken world. The Resurrection reminds us, as St Francis so beautifully lived, that light always finds a way through darkness, peace has the final word over fear, and love is strongest when it is humble, courageous, and lived in service of others. In a world that continues to know division, suffering and uncertainty, Easter calls us again to be people of hope, compassion, and reconciliation.

This term has been rich in courage, learning, opportunity, and connection. I extend my sincere gratitude to our students for the enthusiasm, curiosity and generosity of spirit they bring each day, and to our families for the partnership and trust that support the flourishing of our young people. Together, you help make our college a place where learning is meaningful, relationships are nurtured and faith is lived authentically.

I also wish to thank our staff - teachers, support staff, and extended leadership team - for their unwavering dedication to the life of the college.  Your commitment, professionalism and care ensure that our students are known, challenged, and supported each day. In the spirit of St Francis, St Clare and Elizabeth Hayes - your daily acts of service, often quiet and unseen, continue to shape a community grounded in dignity, respect, and joy.

I particularly want to thank and acknowledge all of the students and families who worked in partnership with us today – an important school day for attendance. Our last day of term has been filled with learning, a profoundly beautiful Easter liturgy and culminating in pure joy- a House Choir Competition! It has been a magnificent and cup filling finish to a great term.

This year, as we have celebrated and reflected on 70 years of Mount Alvernia College, we continue to honour all who have gone before us; the founding Missionary Franciscan Sisters, past students, families and staff - whose vision and faith have shaped the community we are privileged to steward today.  Their legacy calls us forward to continue building a future grounded in Gospel values, courage, and hope. Each day that passes, I am confident that we are adding to this rich tapestry faithfully and authentically.

As we enter the Easter holiday period, I encourage everyone to take time for rest, prayer, and connection. May this be a time of peace, renewal, and deep gratitude as you gather with loved ones. The Franciscan spirit, rooted in simplicity, humility, and compassion, has profoundly influenced community responses to challenges throughout history. In today’s uncertain times I encourage each one of us to lean into our Franciscan commitments to:

  • Simplicity and Sustainability:

Resource Sharing: Franciscans have promoted a lifestyle of minimalism and sharing, encouraging communities to use resources wisely. Have we considered carpooling? Public Transport options?

  • Compassion and Service:

Franciscans have often been at the forefront of providing care and relief to the poor and marginalized, especially during times of crisis such as plagues or economic downturns. Is this an opportunity to check in on elderly neighbours?

  • Promotion of Peace and Reconciliation:

Known for our peaceful approach, Franciscans have historically acted as mediators in conflicts, fostering dialogue and understanding. We have also been known to inspire movements for social justice and nonviolent change, emphasizing peace over conflict. What words do we choose when people speak of the global conflict unfolding? Do we speak of hope and peace over hate and condemnation?

  • Community Building and Inclusivity:

We embrace all individuals, regardless of status or background, race or religion, promoting inclusivity and unity (please listen to our Captain’s new Podcast, Beyond the Bell! It is extraordinary). We encourage local community involvement and empowerment, focusing on building strong, supportive networks. What other actions or behaviours might we draw upon to ensure inclusivity and belonging?

On behalf of the College Leadership Team, I wish you all a safe, restful, and blessed Easter. I will be enjoying a couple of rainforest re-set days in Northern NSW, my happy place.

May the hope of the Risen Christ fill your hearts and guide us all as we continue the journey of 2026 together.

Peace and all good.
