Street Art

This course allows students to develop their creative ability, think imaginatively, explore and comment on the world around them. Students will consider the meaning of subcultures within contemporary youth culture. By studying the symbolism attached to clothing and music along with other visible signs of membership within various groups, students will deconstruct ways symbols are interpreted by members of the dominant culture.
Students will study Street Art as a way of understanding society and examine the work of past and contemporary artists. For example, students will learn how Street Art is an important cultural movement of the 21st century sweeping the globe, reclaiming and transforming urban space into legitimate art forms. They will compare how these art works are viewed compared to public art within our environment, and they will learn about other artists who create works that reflect material realities of everyday life.
