Grade 6 Students Explore Indigenous Designs Through AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round

As part of their learning around culture, identity, and symbolism in art, our Grade 6 students have been exploring the powerful meanings behind Indigenous designs featured in the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round. This special round celebrates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Australian football and broader community life.

Students have been researching a variety of designs used in past AFL Indigenous guernseys, learning about the stories, symbols, and traditions they represent. They’ve taken inspiration from these designs to begin planning their own artwork, tailored to a sports club or team of their choice.

To bring their ideas to life, students have the option to bring in personal items—such as T-shirts, sports equipment, or accessories—to decorate with their designs (with parental permission of course!). For those who prefer, paper and a few other options are available at school.

Thanks Cooper for sharing your boots with the class.
The beginnings of a great design!
Another great work in progress!
An old footy getting a new look!
These bowling pins were a cheap find at the op shop and provide a great place to add designs to.
