OPEN WEEK - BOOK FAIR AND OPEN DAY/NIGHT

We had many visitors, both prospective and current parents during the Open Morning and Open Night this week. Our outstanding School Leaders led many school tours, confidently communicating information about the learning programs at Milgate.

Student buskers were heard throughout the school, demonstrating their incredible talent. It was great to see so many families and students enjoying the activities in classrooms around the school and visiting the Book Fair in the library. Special thank you to our Performing Arts teachers, Ms Odette Strickland and Mr Warwick Davies for organising the buskers, Choir and Rock Band on the night.

YEAR 1 & 2 SWIMMING

This week, the Year 1 & 2 students had the opportunity to take their learning outside the classroom and into Aquarena Aquatic Centre. The students focused on fundamental swimming techniques such as floating, kicking, and various strokes. They also built their understanding of essential water safety measures, such as how to call for help.

It was great to see the students use their risk-taker learner profile to be able refine their swimming craft and build their confidence in water. The Year 1 & 2 teachers would like to thank all the parent helpers who supported the swimming program.

MANNINGHAM MONSTER RAFFLE

Manningham has held the Monster Community Raffle as an annual event for over 19 years. The raffle is proudly supported by the Templestowe Bowling Club and there is an incredible $10,000 worth of prizes on offer.

Milgate is selling tickets this year as a great opportunity to fundraise for our school and the Manningham Community Fund. We will receive $1.50 for every $2 ticket sold! Last year we raised $2300!

Tickets will be going home with the eldest child from each family. Please ensure the money and ticket stubs including unsold tickets are returned to the office in a clearly labelled envelope/ziplock bag by the end of this term. The 2025 raffle will be drawn at the Templestowe Bowling Club at 7pm on Wednesday 23 July. The school will be putting the money raised to beautifying the school grounds as part of our fundraising goals for this year.

YEAR 4 EXCURSION - NGV AND LUME

On Thursday, our Year 4 students had a fantastic time participating in a Visual Arts excursion in the city. They first visited NGV International, followed by a walk along Southbank towards the multi-sensory Van Gogh digital art experience at The Lume.

This excursion provided a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of both the classroom and Visual Arts units of inquiry this term, as they share the same central idea: “Technology is continually changing our world and how we interact”. Students explored different ways that technology is being used to create art, how art materials and techniques have evolved over time, and examples of beautiful items that are functional as well as being artistic. All of these provided lots of creative inspiration for art projects back at school this term.

Student highlights included viewing and interacting with the huge variety of artworks from around the world at the NGV, being able to pose in a 3D recreation of Van Gogh’s famous “The Bedroom” painting, images moved across the wall and floors at The Lume, and smelling the scents that matched the paintings as they floated through the room.

YEAR 5 MARK WILSON INCURSION

On Tuesday, Year 5 students participated in an incursion with author and illustrator Mark Wilson. He shared his inspiration for his books and demonstrated that ideas don’t have to be big, they can come from tiny, little things. His main message for the students is that ‘your first draft is your worst draft’ and encourages them to get inspiration from talking to people around them, looking at pictures, dreams, and passions. In week 5, the Year 5 students begin their next writing unit, an author study on Mark Wilson and we look forward to further unpacking his texts and experimenting with his advice!

SENSORY GARDEN UPDATE

Last Friday, Zoe from Bunnings came to visit our Garden Club with donations of seedlings and equipment. With the help of our gardeners, parents and Jill Danne, we planted winter vegetables behind Manuka as well as in the sensory garden.

Zoe returned on Monday to help plant with the Foundation students. Students were excited to learn about the planting process from Zoe and give it a go with gloves, trowels and watering cans. They enjoyed planting a variety of edible seedlings such as broccoli, pak choy and broad beans. Thanks Zoe and Bunnings for your support, we look forward to seeing you again in Spring!

ES APPRECIATION DAY

Today is ES Appreciation Day where we celebrate our incredible Education Support (ES) staff! We are so lucky to have such dedicated and compassionate individuals who go above and beyond every day to support our students. We thank them for the care, kindness, and commitment they bring to our school community. We will be celebrating the ES on our Curriculum Day with a special morning tea.
