Celebrating Middle School Achievements

Work Experience, Exams and Beyond

As we approach the final four weeks of Term 2, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the many achievements of our Year 9 and 10 students. Most recently, our Year 10 students completed their work experience placements, and we couldn’t be prouder of the way they represented the college in a variety of workplaces across Melbourne and beyond. From retail and hospitality to health, education, and engineering, students gained valuable insight into professional environments. Many developed their communication, time management and teamwork skills, while others demonstrated initiative, resilience and a strong work ethic. The feedback from employers has been overwhelmingly positive, and we commend our students for making the most of this opportunity.

Looking ahead, Year 9 and 10 students will soon sit their Semester 1 exams in core subjects and any VCE subjects they may be undertaking. For our Year 9s, this is one of their first experiences with a formal exam setting. Teachers have been supporting students by providing revision materials and practice questions, and we encourage students to start preparing early. Creating a study schedule, revisiting class notes, and asking for clarification on any challenging topics are all excellent ways to feel confident and prepared.

In addition to their academic progress, Year 9 and 10 students have been shining on the sporting field and stage. This term, students represented MGSC with pride and determination in interschool netball, soccer, badminton, AFL, and cross country, achieving strong results and showing great team spirit. We were also incredibly impressed by the talent on display at the recent Vocal Night, where many Year 9 and 10 students performed solos and group numbers, showcasing their vocal ability, creativity and stage presence. It was a truly memorable evening that highlighted the breadth of talent in our community. At the Aerobics and Dance State Finals last weekend, Year 9 and 10 students qualified for the National Competition, to be held in Tasmania next term.

A reminder that our 2026 Year 10 Information Evening and 2026 Year 11 Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 24 June. This important event will provide families with details about subject selections for 2026, including the VCE, VCE Vocational Major and other pathways. We strongly encourage all students and parents/carers to attend.

We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 9 and 10 students are engaging with school life – both academically and beyond the classroom – and we look forward to seeing them finish the semester with focus and enthusiasm.

Year 10 Work Experience

The Student Experience

Last week, the Year 10s went on Work Experience, stepping out of the classroom and into real workplaces. We were placed in all sorts of industries—healthcare, education, fashion, and more. Early mornings, busy days, and the responsibility of being part of a team gave us a taste of what working life is really like. It was a chance to build independence, learn new skills, and get a better idea of what we might want to do in the future.

One of us, Tiana, spent her week at The Alfred Hospital. She got to observe the forensic pathology unit and help with different tasks, giving her a hands-on look at what medical staff do every day. Tiana said, "It was amazing to see how a hospital really works, especially all the behind-the-scenes stuff. Meeting so many inspiring women was a highlight. My favourite part was watching biopsies and seeing how they test on sight."

Another student, Emma, worked at the Peter Alexander Head Office. She explored how a major fashion brand operates behind the scenes, helped set up photoshoots, and even met Peter Alexander himself. Emma shared, "It was a great opportunity to explore possible career options, and I had the best time. Definitely a highlight of this year so far."
