Visual Arts

Over the past two weeks in Visual Arts, Foundation students were introduced to the exciting world of printmaking. They began with fingerprint art, illustrating scenes such as playgrounds or cities and bringing them to life by adding fingerprint characters. They also explored crayon rubbings, going on a texture scavenger hunt to uncover hidden patterns by placing paper over various textured surfaces. Year 1/2 students experimented with crayon transfer printing by completely covering one side of a sheet with coloured crayon. They then drew on the back, applying pressure to transfer the image and produce a vibrant print. Continuing with texture exploration, students created crayon rubbings, followed by leaf rubbings added to printed tree trunks to represent one of the four seasons. They also explored collagraph printing, designing their own printing plates using foam shapes glued to cardboard. After applying paint, students pressed their plates onto paper to produce one-of-a-kind printsโ€”and even had the chance to swap their collagraphs with classmates.

Year 3/4 students completed their paper x-ray art collages of Australian animals as part of Reconciliation Week. Year 5/6 students explored more advanced printmaking techniques, including monoprinting and gelli plate printing, to create layered and textured artworks. Inspired by Australian artist Lesley Gibbons, they began developing their backgrounds using gelli plates to experiment with colour, pattern, and texture in preparation for their final pieces.

PEย

In week 7, students participated in a soccer session for PE. This was a one off session where students learnt the key elements of soccer from kicking the ball correctly with the inside of their foot, to stopping a moving ball and dribbling. The students then worked together to work on passing, teamwork and a small game. It was a fun day as students loved the chance to test their soccer skills.

Week 8 was a short week with only the preps and year 5/6 students participating in PE this week. Both year levels were introduced to the sport of badminton, with the preps using balloons to modify the skill and make it easier to hit rather than using a shuttle cock (birdie). The students learnt about the safety aspects when using a racquet and then how to hold the racquet correctly. They also explored ways to move the racquet when balancing a balloon or the birdie.

They also had the opportunity to hit with a partner and to targeted areas. It is a specialised sport, but the kids really enjoy getting to learn and play a different sport.

The year 1-4 students will be introduced to badminton over the next few weeks.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย

Interschool Sports

Interschool sports continued again over the past few weeks.

We played Mentone Girls Grammar with a game against the girls softball, and two netball games, with the mixed softball and soccer doing practice. It was a good day of competition and we had wins in all games. The following week we played Kingston Heath Primary School. There was games for each team and again the competition was high. The mixed softball had their first win for the term which was exciting, the girls softball team continues to excel with most girls in year 4. The mixed soccer team had a pulsating draw and the two netball teams had strong competition and just went down.

We have two more rounds to go before the final lightning premiership day in three weeks time.

Girls Soccer Gala Day

It was an exciting day last Thursday as 12 of our year 5 and 6 girls went to Mentone Grammar Playing Fields to play a round robin soccer day against a number of local schools for the Kingston District girls soccer.

With only Maya being the only girl who plays soccer outside of school, they girls did an outstanding job. They tried really hard, listened to Mrs Bakerโ€™s coaching tips and supported each other extremely well.

The first game our girls attacked relentlessly with 10-12 shots on goal, but couldnโ€™t score, and Christway had only three shots but scored, so we had a narrow loss. The second game was a 1 all draw and the third game we won. The fourth game was against the eventual overall winner and we had a small loss 3 to 1.ย

I was very proud of their efforts and they all had a great day.

Well done girls.

Libraryย

ย

The term is coming to an end, and so are the busiest couple of months in the library.

ย

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success. We made just under $4500, and from that, were able to choose books and book fair products worth over $1200. The library leaders and I had so much fun walking around the fair and picking books we thought the library was missing. Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us, and all the outstanding leaders who helped out.
