Our Round Square service students have chosen to continue building on the connection our school has established over the years with the residents at Wontama aged care facility. This initiative, known as the Intergenerational Project, aims to foster meaningful relationships between students and the elderly community.
This year, we expanded the program to include students from Year 7 to Year 12. Twice each term, these students will visit Wontama to spend time with the residents and plan engaging activities.
On Monday 13 May, nine students hosted a delightful high tea at Wontama. The goal was to converse with the residents to discover what activities they might enjoy in the future. Our students wanted to ensure that the activities planned were genuinely interesting to the residents, so they chose this "getting to know you" event as their first activity of the year. Some ideas for our next visits included karaoke and musical items as well as drawing classes and movement activities.
The interactions were truly inspiring. As I moved around the common room, I overheard many special conversations. The students played Scrabble, draughts, dominoes, and puzzles, while others preferred to simply chat. I am incredibly proud of our students for their efforts in making a positive impact on someone else's life. The staff at Wontama expressed their gratitude and thanks to all the students for their brilliant efforts.
