Peer Mediation

Our Peer Mediation program has launched at BPS!

What is Peer Mediation?

Peer Mediation is a student led peer support program in which students help create a school environment that is positive, caring, safe and friendly.

Peer Mediation is a process which allows students' conflicts to be handled by the disputants themselves, with the assistance of Peer Mediators.

They can assist with low level behavioural issues in the yard that do not require adult intervention.

The six steps of peer mediation are as follows:

  1. Agree to mediate
  2. Find out what the problem is
  3. Find out what each person wants
  4. Finding solutions
  5. Choosing the best ideas
  6. Create an agreement.

Our grade 5 peer mediators and grade 6 well being captains attended a training day where they learned how to assist their peers to find a resolution to their conflicts.

Our first groups of peer mediators are now working during lunchtimes as another resource for students to use when they require support.

The students are currently based at the Friendship area outside the Foundation classrooms and wear bright coloured vests.

We believe this program will assist student wellbeing in the playground by empowering students through their peers, to take ownership over their own wellbeing.

The students have access to mentor teachers to support them.

It has been exciting to see the confidence grow in our peer mediator trainees and as they have practised mock scenarios and now put their training to use in the real world!

The training and materials used to kick off this program has been made possible through the JSC Easter Raffle fundraiser held last term.

Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.
