Glen Eira City Council My Brother Jack Writing Awards
The My Brother Jack Awards recognise the outstanding literary achievements of people who live, work or study in Glen Eira. Since 1996 this competition has been judged, and seen many students and adults enter pieces of writing! The name of the award comes from 'My Brother Jack' a novel written by George Johnston and is set in the Glen Eira area.
This year we are excited to pass on that all of our students will be entering the competition!
St Anthony's students will be entering in the Junior Primary (Prep to Year Three) and Senior Primary (Year Four to Year Six) categories. In each category four stories or poems are shortlisted before a winner is announced. Further information can be found through this link.
We understand that there may be thousands of entries, but you need to be in it to win it! Regardless of any results we are immensely proud of the work that our students are completing.
As you would expect, writing skills look different in each of our year levels as students grow and develop their skills. Through the years students learn how to write effectively at a sentence level with correct spelling and punctuation. They then further learn about the structure of different writing pieces such as narratives, poems, recaps, persuasive arguments and more!
We thought we would take the opportunity to share some examples of our entries at each year level. Our staff have assisted our students in editing and transcribing their work, as the focus for this competition should be our students wonderful ideas and creativity. Please enjoy these samples below!
Charlotte in Prep tells us about a magical portal in a tree!
Tobias in Year One tells us about meeting Leo and his special pet!
Dalia in Year Two unpacks what happens when something exciting gets cancelled!
Noah in Year Three takes us on an action packed adventure with the Force!
Christelle in Year Four shares the actual story about Little Red Riding Hood!
Lily H in Year Five has crafted a wonderful poem about being in the moment.
Charlie in Year Six shares an epic space adventure!
We hope you enjoyed reading these varied and interesting writing pieces! We will see how we go with this competition!
Wishing everyone in our wonderful community a restful and joyful school holiday break! Maybe some time to write some more stories!
Take care!
