3/4K Writing – Genre and Story Boarding Fun!
In Literacy this term we have been reading the class mentor text called ‘Brindabella’ by Ursula Dubosarsky. We have been discussing what it means to ‘Plan for Success’ in our writing by using story boards. We have also been mapping our stories out on a ‘story mountain’ to make sure that we include all the important parts like the introduction, problem, rising tension and solution.
3/4K students have also been partner reading different books so that we could analyse and discuss their features. We learnt about genre too – that’s what type of book it is… like mystery, action, fairytales, science fiction and Johnathon’s favourite – historical fiction!
As part of the Book Week celebrations, we got to meet some famous Australian authors in two online meetings.
First we met Jacqueline Harvey… she writes the Alice Miranda and Kevin the Sheep books. Jacqueline has a brand-new book called ‘The Girl and the Ghost’ which is coming out next month! We can’t wait! Jacqueline told us that it’s important when writing to have a problem that is worth solving… and to make sure we use lots of descriptive words to set the scene. She loves writing mystery stories, so we also got to learn about villains and heroes!
In our second online meeting, we got to meet Andy Griffiths. He told us about his latest book ‘You Me and the Peanut Butter Beast’. He took us on a ‘choose your own adventure’ quiz to test out our ideas about writing, and how we can make our stories more dangerous… and interesting for our audience!
We are so lucky to be able to join these live meetings with other students from around Australia thanks to the State Library of Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria.
At assembly we created posters of a scene in our writing, and read out some exciting parts from our own stories which we plan to enter in the Mount Beauty Writers Festival. We hope you like them 😊
