Director of Business Affairs Update – Operations & Staffing

Human Resources
The Human Resources team has enjoyed a busy and rewarding term, with several key initiatives underway. We are delighted to announce the launch of the new ELMO Recruitment module, which is already streamlining the way we manage applications and improving the overall experience for candidates, HR staff, and recruitment panels alike.
Looking ahead, workforce planning and recruitment for 2026 have been a major focus. You may have noticed a flurry of advertisements across our recruitment channels as we work to ensure the right people are in place well in advance.
We also recently celebrated Wellbeing Week in Week 8, which, for staff, included a long weekend, no after-hours meetings, a free massage service, and a shared soup lunch. These initiatives, while small, reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting the health, wellbeing, and work–life balance of our staff.
Risk & Compliance
Acute respiratory illness activity in Tasmania is currently at a moderate level. To help keep our Friends’ community safe and well, we ask families to keep children at home from School and Early Learning if they are unwell. Staying home not only supports your child’s recovery but also helps reduce the risk of illness spreading to others.
We also remind families of the importance of managing concussions carefully. The Tasmanian Health Service provides a clear and practical Concussion Management Resource that offers guidance on recognising symptoms and supporting recovery. If your child experiences a concussion, please ensure you notify the relevant School Office so we can provide appropriate support and adjustments during their return to learning and activities.
Facilities & Services
The School’s Maintenance team has recently completed the refurbishment of the Starlight Playground at Friends’ Early Learning. The new design provides our three-year-old children with a dedicated outdoor play space that supports exploration and learning, including a built-in gathering area for group activities.
Friends Health & Fitness
Community Survey
Recently, the Centre conducted a survey inviting members to share their experiences and provide feedback. The aim was to better understand how our members use the Centre and what they are looking for in terms of programs and services.
The survey was very well received, with more than 200 responses offering valuable insights. This feedback is helping to guide how we develop our services and enhance member satisfaction. An action plan is now being prepared, and several quick wins are already being implemented to support our members more effectively. Updates on these changes will be shared with the community as part of our ongoing commitment to improving the member experience.
Gary Kearney Retirement
After 22 years of dedicated service, Gary Kearney has retired from his role as Facilities and Maintenance Coordinator at Friends Health & Fitness.
Gary’s commitment to maintaining the Centre with skill, care, and attention to detail has been instrumental in creating the safe and welcoming environment we all value today. His deep knowledge of the building, tireless work ethic, and quiet presence behind the scenes have provided peace of mind for both staff and members. Gary’s retirement marks the end of an era, and we are deeply grateful for the lasting contribution he has made to our community.
Argyle Motor Lodge
The Argyle Motor Lodge has recently undergone a significant transformation, completing several key upgrades to enhance the guest experience. A new, modern switchboard has been installed. Guests will also notice the new roadside sign, which has already led to a noticeable increase in direct bookings.
Technology improvements are also a focus, with a new website now live, contributing to a spike in winter bookings. Furthermore, a new Wi-Fi system has been installed, providing excellent coverage in all rooms. To ensure guest and staff safety, new CCTV security cameras have been installed throughout the property. These changes demonstrate Argyle Motor Lodge's commitment to providing a comfortable and secure stay for all.
