Building Healthy Digital Habits Over the Holidays

With the school holidays approaching, it’s a great time to set up positive routines around technology use at home. Technology is an important part of our students’ lives, and over the break, it will often be how they stay connected with their friends. By putting simple habits in place, we can help children enjoy the benefits of technology while keeping safe and balanced.

Inform and Empower have created an excellent resource called Building Healthy Digital Habits, which offers practical tips for families:

  • Schedule screen time – Just like bedtime routines, set clear times when screens are switched off. This supports good sleep and encourages other activities.

  • Talk it out – Make online experiences part of everyday family conversations. Ask your child what they’re doing and how they’re feeling online.

  • Prioritise sleep – Blue light from screens can affect sleep. Create a device-free zone before bedtime.

  • Set device-free zones – Keep bedrooms, bathrooms, and mealtimes screen-free to encourage rest, play, and family connection.

  • Encourage breaks – Regularly step away from screens to read, play, or spend time outdoors.

  • Trust instincts – Teach your child that if something feels wrong online, it probably is. Encourage them to come to you if they feel uncomfortable.

  • Balance screen time with “green time” – Balance technology use with outdoor play, hobbies, and time with friends and family.

Navigating Uncomfortable Situations Online

Sometimes, children may come across things online that make them feel uneasy. Here are some simple strategies you can share with them:

  • Don’t respond to negative or upsetting content.

  • Take a screenshot or save it if needed.

  • Step away and take a break.

  • Report inappropriate behaviour using the platform’s tools.

  • Seek help by talking to a trusted adult.

Above all, open communication is key. Encourage your child to share their online experiences with you and let them know you are there to listen and support them.
