Term 2 Week 10

Year 10 Newsletter

Welcome to Week 10, the final week of Term 2!

This term, students developed their skills in writing information reports and then applied these skills to create informative speeches about a chosen Australian animal. Using the structure of an information report, students researched and organised factual information about their animal before transforming it into a speech. They were encouraged to add their own personality and presentation style to make their speeches engaging for their audience.

Students completed their speeches and created accompanying posters to support their presentations. Their posters included key facts, headings, images, and labelled diagrams to enhance audience understanding and showcase their learning. Students then presented their speeches and posters to their classmates, demonstrating their growing confidence in public speaking and their knowledge of Australian animals.

Throughout this unit, students learned about the key features that make an effective information report, speech, and presentation. These included:

• A clear title that identified the topic• An introduction that provided a general overview of the animal• Organised paragraphs that grouped similar information together• Subheadings to help structure ideas and guide the audience• Factual information presented clearly and accurately• Technical vocabulary related to the topic• Visual elements such as images, diagrams, and labelled illustrations to support understanding• Speaking skills including clear voice projection, expression, and audience engagement

We were incredibly proud of the effort students put into their speeches and presentations and enjoyed seeing them share their learning with their classmates.

Science:

This term in Science, students have been exploring the fascinating world of living things. They investigated the differences between living, non-living, and once-living things, learning how to identify the characteristics all living things need to survive, such as food, water, and air. Students also practised grouping and classifying items from the world around them based on these features.

As part of this unit, students explored the life cycles of plants and animals and developed an understanding of how living things grow and change over time. They compared a range of life cycles, including those of insects, mammals, and plants, and discovered that some living things go through dramatic transformations while others change more gradually.

Students also learnt that offspring share similarities with their parents, but are not exactly the same. This helped students recognise patterns in growth, change, and reproduction across different living things.

Swimming: The students who participated in the swimming program thoroughly enjoyed the experience and approached each session with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. It was wonderful to see the progress they made throughout the program, with many students developing greater confidence in the water and improving their swimming skills. They should be proud of their efforts, perseverance, and willingness to challenge themselves as they worked towards achieving their personal goals.

As we come to the end of another busy and successful term, we would like to thank all students and families for their ongoing support. We hope everyone enjoys a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable holiday break. The children have worked incredibly hard throughout the term and deserve the opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with family and friends. We look forward to hearing about their holiday adventures and welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning in Term 3. Have a wonderful break!
