Mathematics

Number and Algebra
Students will continue developing their understanding of numbers to 20 and beyond. They will practise counting forwards and backwards, using counting backwards as a strategy to solve subtraction problems. Students will model simple subtraction situations, write number sentences and equations, and use the correct mathematical symbols to represent their thinking.
As part of our work with number, students will explore sharing collections and making equal groups. They will be introduced to mathematical vocabulary related to the four operations and encouraged to explain and justify their mathematical thinking using appropriate terminology.
Students will also learn about ordinal numbers (such as first, second and third) and develop their skills in ordering numbers and collections. Through practical activities using money, they will represent and solve simple financial situations involving addition and subtraction.
In addition, students will investigate repeating patterns by recognising, copying, continuing and creating patterns, and representing these in a variety of ways.
Measurement
Students will be focusing on sorting and comparing objects that are empty, half full or full. They will learn to connect the days of the week to familiar events and actions and draw and scribe upcoming events on their own calendars.
Space
Students will be involved in sorting, naming and creating familiar 2D and 3D shapes. They will learn to recognise and describe familiar shapes within objects in the environment and be able to explain their attributes.
Statistics
Students will collect, sort and compare data represented by objects and images in response to given investigative questions. They will be involved in analysing and comparing data that relate to familiar situations.
