Grade 1 Community News

Hello Grade 1 Families,

We are making our way through term four very quickly. Below is the learning that our students have been doing this past fortnight that we would love to share with you. We would love to share our important dates with you, too.

InitiaLit

In Weeks 5 and 6, we have been learning the new tricky words; walk, talk and know. We have been reviewing our sounds and looking at the prefix ‘un’. We will continue to look at multi-syllable words and review all our learning over the year.

Here are our upcoming tricky words, which you can practice at home!

For more practice, ask your child to write sentences using these words.

Maths

This week in Maths, our Grade 1 students have been learning about adding larger numbers using our regrouping strategy. We have also been looking at volume of shapes using cubes and containers.

Next, students will be learning to create their own patterns and continue looking at probability.

We are sending fluency practice home with students each week – please try to encourage your child to complete one a day. We complete our fluency practice daily in class with a 2-minute timer.

You can support this learning at home by asking your child to add two 2-digit numbers together using digits or by using materials at home to allow your child to model (matches, straws etc.)

Knowledge Building

This fortnight, our Grade 1 students are continuing to learn about astronomy. We are continuing to look at expanding our sentences to make them more interesting. We break this down into who/whatwhen, where and doing what to help build a more engaging sentence for the reader.

Students also learned about caption writing and proper nouns and how these are used in our writing. You can support your child’s learning at home by reading non-fiction texts and looking for captions and proper nouns.

We have looked at the constellations, star gazing and the phases of the moon. You could have a look at the sky in the evening and see if you can spot any stars as well as looking at the moon to see if you can tell which phase of the moon appears each night.

Next, students will begin writing their own planet passport!

Storybook

We have been reading the book "Harry By the Sea" by Gene Zion and “Wanted! Ralfy Rabbit, Book Burglar’” by Emily MacKenzie. Students have been practising retelling the stories in their own words to their peers, creating a poster using adjectives to make good descriptions of characters and looking at key vocabulary from our books.
