Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,

It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of Week 6! The term is flying by, and students continue to impress us with their enthusiasm, effort, and growing independence. We’ve enjoyed seeing their curiosity and teamwork shine through in class activities and special programs. As we move into the second half of the term, our focus remains on maintaining positive learning habits, supporting one another, and celebrating every success—big or small. Thank you for joining us for a very successful PLC 5 open session, where the walls were buzzing with collaborative poetry writing with our families.

Elephant Ed Health Incursion

The ElephantED Health Incursion workshops are evidence-based, age-appropriate sessions which are designed to empower young people to make informed, positive and safe decisions about consent, relationships and growing up. The workshops are aligned to the Victorian Curriculum Personal and Social Capabilities. These workshops are interactive in order for students to explore tricky topics of body changes, sexual education and puberty, in a safe and respected environment.

This incursion also supports our Respectful Relationships curriculum, specifically the topics we cover in Grade 5 in term 4. The cost of this event is $17 and is non-refundable as per our refund policy. We have applied existing CSEF/SSB credit to this event, so your cost has been adjusted accordingly.

Knowledge Building

We have started our last Knowledge Building unit and text for the year - The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. This story follows an 11-year-old girl who visits the Arctic Circle and finds a lonely, injured bear who is found to be the very last bear on Bear Island. Grade 5 students will be exploring the themes ofEnvironmentalism / Climate changewhilst writing in the persuasive genre. This unit will also focus on sentence summaries, revising and editing and upgrading verb choice when arguing a point of view.

Mathematics

Our next unit focus will be Operations. In this 12-lesson unit, students work with mathematical operations and problem-solving strategies. They have learned a range of strategies for performing calculations and solving problems in previous units. The focus of this unit is to further develop students’ understanding of the effects of adjustments within calculations and using mathematical representations to assist in solving problems.
